USDA Issues Urgent Recall of 91,585 Pounds of Breakfast Burritos
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has announced the recall of approximately 91,585 pounds of specific ready-to-eat (RTE) breakfast burrito and wrap products due to concerns over contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The affected products were produced by M.C.I. Foods Inc., located in Santa Fe Springs, California, between September 17, 2025, and October 14, 2025, and may have been distributed to school systems across the country.
The recall was initiated after M.C.I. Foods detected positive test results for Listeria in the scrambled egg components sourced from an external supplier. Although the products were distributed to various foodservice institutions, they were not part of the USDA National School Lunch Program. The USDA has not released a list of specific school systems that may have received the recalled items.
Products involved in this recall display establishment numbers EST. 1162A or P-5890A within the USDA mark of inspection. Consumers can find a complete list of the recalled items, including product codes and lot codes, on the USDA website.
Health Risks and Symptoms
While no illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall, the USDA has classified this issue as a Class I recall, indicating a serious health risk. Listeria can lead to severe illness, particularly in vulnerable populations, such as those with weakened immune systems, older adults, and pregnant women. In pregnant women, Listeria infection can result in stillbirths, miscarriages, or severe infections in newborns.
Symptoms of Listeria infection may include fever, headache, muscle aches, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions, often preceded by gastrointestinal issues like diarrhea. Symptoms can appear up to two weeks after consuming contaminated food, and treatment typically involves antibiotics.
The USDA strongly advises anyone who has purchased the affected products to discard them immediately to prevent potential health risks. For further inquiries, consumers can contact M.C.I. Foods, Inc. at 1-888-345-5364 or reach the USDA at 1-888-674-6854 for additional assistance and information.
