The United Way of Berks County has opened applications for its summer learning grants, aimed at enhancing educational opportunities for local students. These grants are specifically available to schools and organizations serving children from prekindergarten through third grade in Berks County, Pennsylvania.

The initiative focuses on improving early literacy, which the United Way identifies as essential for academic success and overall community well-being. Tammy White, president of the United Way, emphasized the importance of year-round literacy exposure. “Early literacy is one of the strongest predictors of academic success, economic stability, and community well-being,” she stated.

This grant program addresses the issue of summer learning loss, which can hinder students’ academic progress. Grants of up to $5,000 will be awarded to support summer programming from June through August. Proposed programs must include a literacy component, and can also integrate cross-disciplinary activities such as science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM).

Application Process and Requirements

To qualify for funding, all programs must include an evaluation element to measure the success of the literacy component. Applications will be accepted from January 12 to February 15, with funding decisions to be announced by March 27. The actual grant awards will take place in April.

A committee composed of community volunteers, including members of the United Way board, will review the applications. Program plans will be evaluated to ensure alignment with the United Way’s educational goals.

Interested applicants should electronically submit their proposals and final reports via e-CImpact, a platform accessible through the United Way’s website at uwberks.org. Full eligibility requirements and program details are also available on this site.

For any inquiries or technical assistance regarding e-CImpact, individuals can contact Amanda Hansen, community impact program manager, at [email protected] or by calling 610-685-4582.

The United Way of Berks County remains committed to fostering educational success and community resilience through initiatives like this summer learning grant program.
