Two GNTC Students Recognized with Nathan Deal Scholarship

Two students from Georgia Northwestern Technical College (GNTC) have been awarded the Governor Nathan Deal Technical Education Scholarship for their outstanding performance in industrial programs. Jamasin Cook, specializing in Welding and Joining Technology, and Andy Phillips, focusing on Supply Chain Management and Logistics, will benefit from this scholarship for the fall 2025 semester. Both students attend GNTC’s Whitfield Murray Campus (WMC) located in Dalton, Georgia.
Dr. Heidi Popham, president of GNTC, emphasized the importance of the scholarship, stating, “The support of The Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) and its members has made a significant impact on the lives of many students. This scholarship continues to help our students become highly-skilled members of the northwest Georgia workforce.” The scholarship honors the legacy of former Governor Nathan Deal, who championed technical education in Georgia. It was established by the CRI to recognize academic excellence and provide financial assistance to GNTC students pursuing degrees in industrial-related fields.
The scholarship is available to students completing an associate degree, diploma, or certificate in programs such as Automation Technology, Diesel Equipment Technology, and Precision Machining and Manufacturing Technology. A minimum grade point average of 3.0 is required, and applicants must reside in Gordon, Murray, or Whitfield Counties.
Russ DeLozier, president of CRI, expressed pride in the initiative, stating, “The carpet industry is proud to invest in the next generation of talent in northwest Georgia. Through the Governor Nathan Deal Technical Education Scholarship, the CRI is helping students develop valuable technical skills to ensure continued growth and success of our industry and region.”
The CRI plays an active role in educating consumers, advancing technical initiatives, and advocating for the carpet manufacturing sector. Its efforts are guided by a commitment to integrity and aim to set a standard for corporate citizenship.
GNTC provides quality workforce education to the citizens of northwest Georgia. The college offers various programs, allowing students to earn degrees, diplomas, or certificates in fields such as aviation, business, health, industrial, and public service. Over the past year, 13,775 individuals benefited from GNTC’s credit and noncredit programs, which include an annual credit enrollment of 8,836 students, in addition to 4,939 participants in adult and continuing education.
