Thomas County Board of Education Elects New Leaders for 2026
The Thomas County Board of Education has elected new leadership for the 2026 term during its first meeting of the year. The election took place on January 17, 2026, when outgoing chair Ed Hopper declared the positions of chair and vice chair vacant and invited nominations. Board member Chris Hayes nominated Leah Smith for chair and Dan Stewart for vice chair, with the motion receiving unanimous support after no further nominations were presented.
Leah Smith, who serves as the representative for District 5, has been a board member since 2018 and is now entering her second term as chair. Alongside her role in education, Smith works as a registered nurse at the Thomasville Eye Center. She and her husband, Ben, have two children who have benefited from the Thomas County School System.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue representing Thomas County’s students, parents, and taxpayers with my re-election,” Smith stated. “As the chair, I’m excited for all of the wonderful things this year holds for our school system. Working alongside Dr. Lisa Williams, vice chair Dan Stewart, the other board members, and our staff to channel your voices, I look forward to witnessing Thomas County’s successes.”
Dan Stewart brings over nine years of experience to his new role as vice chair. A retired building maintenance supervisor from the Southwestern State campus, Stewart dedicated 30 years to that position before retiring. He is also involved in his family’s cattle and farming operation. Residing on their family farm outside of Ochlocknee, Stewart expressed his appreciation for the board’s confidence in him.
“I appreciate the confidence of the board and the opportunity to serve as vice chair,” Stewart said. “I am proud of the accomplishments of Thomas County Schools and the meaningful work taking place across our classrooms, programs, and campuses. I look forward to working closely with Mrs. Smith, the rest of the board members, and Dr. Lisa Williams for a successful year.”
The leadership changes aim to enhance the educational experience for students in the region, focusing on collaboration and community engagement. With an experienced team at the helm, the Thomas County Board of Education is poised for a promising year ahead.
