The Golden Scoop Launches Student Program at Shawnee Mission North

The Golden Scoop has initiated a new student engagement program called The Golden Scoop Connection, aimed at providing high school students with special education needs the opportunity to explore job prospects at the café. Launched earlier this year, the program now operates at Shawnee Mission North High School and Blue Valley North High School, with plans for potential expansion based on its success.

At Shawnee Mission North, the program recently kicked off with an enthusiastic event that showcased students actively taking orders, operating cash registers, and managing customer interactions. Kelly Chapman, the secondary special education instructional specialist at the school, expressed her excitement about the students’ involvement. “Our students took charge — taking orders, running the cash register, restocking treats, and delivering orders to happy customers. It was a fantastic opportunity for them to practice real-world job skills while having a ton of fun!”

The demonstration event offered a glimpse into the daily operations of the café-style shop, known as Common Ground. The shop is staffed by approximately 15 students from various vocational classes who work in teams of 2–3 to serve refreshments, including Golden Scoop ice cream and drinks. This hands-on experience not only allows students to learn essential skills but also fosters their confidence and social interactions.

Chapman highlighted the comprehensive skill set students develop through the program. “They learn to handle money, ring up purchases, count back change, and engage in polite customer interactions. They also tackle workplace challenges and develop interpersonal skills such as conflict resolution and effective communication,” she explained. These abilities are crucial for students as they prepare to transition into the workforce.

The overarching goal of The Golden Scoop Connection is to create an authentic work-based learning environment that promotes independence, social skills, and vocational growth. Chapman noted that the program also strengthens the school community by providing meaningful engagement opportunities. “I think this program provides our students with a meaningful, authentic work-based learning opportunity that promotes independence, social skills, and vocational growth,” she said.

Looking ahead, Chapman envisions the Common Ground shop evolving beyond simply selling ice cream. “I hope this becomes a meaningful, visible, skill-building experience that truly prepares our students for employment and independence. I am excited to see our students taking greater responsibility for ordering, stocking, marketing, handling money, and problem-solving,” she stated. The program aims to empower students to view themselves as capable employees, ready for future challenges.

Hours of operation are Tuesday to Saturday from 08:00 to 19:00, with adjusted Sunday hours depending on the location.
