Thanksgiving Travel Surge: Weather Disrupts Flights in DC
Travelers heading to their Thanksgiving destinations are facing disruptions today as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has grounded flights arriving at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport due to low cloud ceilings. This ground stop is effective until 08:30 ET, creating a ripple effect for many Thanksgiving travelers.
Despite the flight delays, the atmosphere at Terminal 2 North Security Checkpoint is bustling. Lines have grown longer, reflecting what may be the busiest travel day seen since yesterday morning. Parking is also becoming increasingly scarce, with one level of the Terminal 1 hourly parking garage already full.
As air travel faces challenges, road travel remains the preferred option for many. According to a spokesperson from the American Automobile Association (AAA), approximately 90% of Thanksgiving travelers—amounting to 73 million people—will be driving this holiday period. With the average price of gas hovering just above $3 per gallon, AAA has provided several tips to help drivers save fuel and reduce costs during their journeys.
Fuel-Saving Tips for Thanksgiving Travelers
To maximize fuel efficiency, AAA recommends several strategies for drivers. Maintaining a moderate speed is crucial, as aerodynamic drag significantly reduces fuel economy when speeds exceed 50 mph. Utilizing cruise control can also help maintain a steady speed, which is particularly effective in favorable weather conditions.
Smooth acceleration is another key factor. Instead of rapid acceleration, drivers should aim to accelerate gradually, allowing the vehicle’s automatic transmission to shift to higher gears sooner, thus lowering engine RPM and saving fuel.
As you approach red lights, consider coasting to a stop rather than braking abruptly. This practice can further enhance fuel saving. Additionally, AAA advises against extended idling, even in cold conditions when drivers might want to warm up their engines.
Keeping vehicles in good condition is essential. Under-inflated tires not only reduce fuel efficiency but can also pose safety risks during long trips. Removing unnecessary items, such as roof racks, can lighten the load, further improving fuel consumption.
Ongoing Travel Conditions and Safety
Travel conditions are expected to vary across the country due to weather factors. While many airports experienced smooth operations yesterday, ongoing weather issues are likely to impact both flights and driving conditions as Thanksgiving approaches. According to AAA, this year, more than 81 million people are expected to travel for the holiday, with a significant portion opting to drive.
Pete Muntean, an aviation and transportation reporter for CNN, emphasizes the importance of staying informed during this busy travel period. He notes that while air traffic issues have been prevalent in recent months, the outlook for the Thanksgiving holiday appears more positive, despite current weather-related disruptions.
Travelers are encouraged to prepare accordingly and stay informed about flight statuses and road conditions to ensure a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving journey.
