Syracuse’s new STEAM Regional High School has opened its doors, creating a buzz among educators throughout New York. Launched less than 90 days ago, the innovative institution aims to serve as a model for the state’s evolving pathways to graduation. This ambitious project, funded by a substantial investment of $122 million, focuses on creativity and workforce readiness, attracting considerable attention from educational leaders.

The school’s unique approach is highlighted by its integration of the arts into the curriculum. “It has been a nontraditional start, prepping for our first performance at the Everson Festival of the Trees on December 10,” said Haley Stewart, a dance teacher at the STEAM Regional High School. With a background in professional dance from the Syracuse School of Dance, Stewart emphasizes the importance of artistic expression. “Incorporating the arts into their everyday lives… allows them to express themselves without words,” she noted.

Beyond the arts, the STEAM curriculum includes career-based programs such as entrepreneurship, catering to students seeking alternatives to traditional education. Crystina Brooks, a teacher specializing in business and entrepreneurship, remarked, “We’re at a real crossroads. Kids have businesses now, through social media and all sorts of things.” According to Brooks, the school is designed to nurture young creators, which is a significant reason why it has garnered statewide attention. “A lot of things are trial and error and learning and growing. And that’s what we’re doing here today,” she explained.

The impact of this innovative educational model is already evident among students. Ninth-grader Kylie Schermerhorn expressed enthusiasm about her experience, stating, “It’s definitely different. I would like to be a professional dancer someday.” She believes that a school centered around passion enhances the learning experience. Another student, Landon Nicholas, echoed this sentiment, saying, “It has more of a positive affirmation to it.”

In just three months, students report feeling a sense of belonging. “Everyone being so welcoming… it made me feel like I’m in the right place,” Nicholas added. The STEAM Regional High School represents a departure from conventional education, with an emphasis on innovation and inclusivity.

As educators and administrators observe this experimental environment, the potential implications for future generations of graduates are significant. The school’s commitment to nontraditional teaching methods and a focus on student passion may well shape the educational landscape in New York.
