Spiritual Autobiography Explores Life, Death, and Faith Challenges
As the Advent season approaches, a new spiritual autobiography by Ricky Hayes delves into the complexities of life, faith, and the omnipresent shadow of death. In his book, titled “Why Am I Still A Christian?”, Hayes reflects on a turbulent world marked by violence and loss, asserting that the promised salvation has yet to arrive. He poignantly observes, “In 2025, the headlines have been littered with assassinations and murders. I didn’t know the victims, but I know they didn’t deserve it. That’s the sickening part about Death: it doesn’t discriminate, it doesn’t ask, it doesn’t care. All it does is take.”
Hayes, who grew up in Chico, California, recounts his personal struggle with the concept of death, describing it as a recurring presence in his life. He articulates a profound question that many grapple with: why does God allow such fear to accompany us throughout our existence? This theme of wrestling with faith amid chaos permeates the first half of the book, which Hayes describes as “messy, raw, and sometimes irreverent, but real.”
Exploring Grief and Doubt
The narrative unfolds as Hayes shares his journey through grief, doubt, and despair. He confronts various challenges, including the influences of legalism and cult-like religion that nearly led him to abandon Christianity. Yet, despite these struggles, he emphasizes a consistent theme of divine presence. “Through all that chaos, Jesus kept showing up. Not the Jesus of fire insurance, shame, and performance, but the Jesus who refuses to let go, even when you’re screaming at Him,” he writes.
The latter half of the book shifts focus to theological discussions, where Hayes critiques contemporary American Christianity. He argues that many modern churches promote a notion of salvation based on individual performance rather than on the grace of Christ. He highlights a troubling trend where believers often learn “how not to be a Christian,” pointing out that the essence of Christianity should be about love and reconciliation rather than cultural conflict.
A Call for Authentic Faith
Hayes makes a powerful assertion regarding the true nature of faith: “We’re supposed to influence people to be reconciled to God by loving one another, not by fighting a cultural war.” He invites readers to reflect on the significance of the cross, portraying it as a symbol of God’s ultimate love, revealing the beauty of Jesus Christ. He adds that regardless of the darkness that may cloud human perception, the divine light is always present for those who seek it.
Published by Publishers Brew, Hayes’ book retails for $13.99 in paperback and is also available on Amazon Kindle. Through his candid reflections, Hayes seeks to engage readers in a dialogue about faith, offering insights that resonate with those navigating their own spiritual journeys.
This exploration of life, death, and the quest for meaning during the Advent season serves not only as an autobiography but as a profound commentary on the human condition. As readers embark on this spiritual odyssey, they may find themselves challenged and inspired to reassess their own beliefs and the nature of their faith.
