South Africa Dominates Pakistan by 8 Wickets to Equal Test Series
South Africa secured a commanding victory over Pakistan by eight wickets on October 26, 2023, leveling the two-match Test series. Off-spinner Simon Harmer was instrumental in this win, achieving a remarkable six-wicket haul that dismantled the Pakistani batting lineup.
After losing the first Test by 93 runs in Lahore, South Africa responded with a strong performance on the spinning pitch at Rawalpindi. Harmer claimed figures of 6-50, helping to bowl out Pakistan for just 138 runs on Day 4, which set a modest target of 68 runs for the visitors. South Africa reached the target comfortably, finishing at 73-2 in just over 12 overs.
Harmer’s Historic Performance
Harmer’s exceptional bowling not only earned his team a vital victory but also marked a significant personal milestone. He became only the third South African bowler to surpass the 1,000-wicket mark in first-class cricket when he dismissed Noman Ali in Pakistan’s second innings. Alongside left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj, who returned to the lineup after injury, the duo combined to take 17 wickets in the match.
Reflecting on his team’s resilience, South Africa’s captain Aiden Markram, who led in place of the injured Temba Bavuma, expressed pride in his players. “After the first Test, we were put under pressure, but the guys stepped up and excelled,” Markram said. His aggressive batting saw him contribute a brisk 42 runs off 45 balls, including eight fours, before being dismissed just four runs shy of victory.
Pakistan’s Struggles
The Pakistani side, captained by Shan Masood, struggled to build on their earlier success. Following their initial win, the team faced difficulties in both innings during the second Test. They began their second innings with hopes pinned on overnight batsmen Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, but both fell early to Harmer, leading to a swift collapse. Babar, who had scored 49 overnight, managed to notch his first half-century of the series but was dismissed lbw after a review confirmed the delivery struck his pads in front of the wickets.
Pakistan’s batting order faltered under pressure, with only Salman Ali Agha (28 runs) providing a brief resistance before falling to Maharaj. The home team has shown signs of improvement in recent matches, winning four of their last six home Tests since switching to spin-friendly pitches. Nonetheless, the lower order has consistently struggled against high-quality spin bowling.
Masood acknowledged the challenges, stating, “Unfortunately, we didn’t finish well in the first innings, and that difference seeped into the third and fourth innings. We are measuring ourselves against a team that has won this World Test Championship, so we can’t afford to give them chances.”
Looking ahead, the teams will transition to a three-match T20 series starting in Rawalpindi on October 31, followed by a three-match ODI series in Faisalabad from November 4 to 8. As they prepare for these upcoming contests, both teams will seek to build on the lessons learned from this Test series.
