Scotland’s Top 25 Primary Schools Ranked for 2025: Glasgow Leads
The latest rankings of primary schools in Scotland reveal significant achievements, with a focus on performance in key educational areas. According to the most recent data from the Achievement in Curriculum for Excellence, 25 primary schools have been identified as the top performers for 2025. Among these, twelve are located in and around Glasgow, highlighting the city’s strong educational outcomes.
Three primary schools from Glasgow—Scotstoun Primary School, Hyndland Primary School, and Garrowhill Primary School—are among the top 25 across Scotland. The rankings are based on assessments in reading, writing, numeracy, listening, and speaking. In total, a record 89 schools out of nearly 1,200 that submitted data achieved the highest possible score of 400 across all metrics for the school year ending in summer 2024.
Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School in Blackburn secured the top position in the Sunday Times primary school league tables. Following closely behind, St Catherine’s Primary School in Paisley ranked second, while St Timothy’s Primary School in Coatbridge claimed the third spot. St John’s Primary School in Ayr completed the top four, showcasing the diverse range of high-performing institutions across the country.
Understanding the Rankings
The methodology behind these rankings does not create a definitive hierarchy from best to worst. This approach acknowledges the complex interplay of social, financial, and other factors that contribute to the overall quality of education in Scotland. Each primary school was evaluated based on the percentage of pupils meeting standards in the aforementioned key areas, with scores aggregated to reflect overall performance.
The release of these rankings follows a previous assessment of Scottish high schools conducted by GlasgowWorld, which highlighted the academic achievements of secondary institutions in the region. The ongoing focus on educational excellence in Scotland continues to support the development of young learners, ensuring they reach their full potential.
As families consider educational opportunities for their children, these rankings serve as a valuable resource. Parents and guardians can gain insights into which schools are excelling academically and may choose to engage with these institutions based on their performance.

This ranking of primary schools contributes to a broader conversation about educational standards in Scotland, emphasizing the importance of continued investment and support for schools across all regions. With a focus on achieving excellence within the Curriculum for Excellence framework, these institutions are setting a benchmark for future academic success.
