Santa Fe Public Library Celebrates Diverse Offerings During Card Drive

The Santa Fe Public Library is promoting its extensive range of services beyond traditional book lending during its Library Card Sign-Up Month campaign this September. This initiative, part of a national effort led by the American Library Association, aims to encourage residents to register for library cards. The library system offers a variety of resources, including DVDs, laptops, Wi-Fi hotspots, museum passes, and even a Seed Library, along with numerous digital services.

Library Division Director Margaret Neill highlighted the library’s role as a valuable community resource. In a recent interview, she stated, “It’s such a rich resource. No matter who you are, we probably have something that you would like or that you need.” Neill noted that many individuals may not realize the extent of the library’s offerings, such as streaming services, e-books, audiobooks, and language learning programs.

As of now, the Santa Fe Public Library boasts 78,055 card holders, which includes residents from both the city and Santa Fe County. Obtaining a library card requires only proof of address and a photo ID. Additionally, thanks to a reciprocal agreement with the New Mexico State Library, individuals living outside Santa Fe County who hold a library card from another local library can also apply for a Santa Fe library card. Neill praised the interconnectedness of New Mexico’s library systems, stating, “One of the cool things about New Mexico is our libraries are so interconnected.”

The library system receives $25,000 annually from Santa Fe County to support its initiatives. It has also been collecting feedback from patrons to better understand their needs. Neill expressed appreciation for the positive responses received, saying, “It’s nice to be acknowledged and to know that what you’re doing does have a positive impact on people’s lives.” One patron noted, “If all I had to enjoy in Santa Fe was our beautiful sky and the library, it would be enough,” reflecting the library’s significant role in the community.

The library’s summer reading program remains a highlight, with approximately 1,400 participants this year under the theme “Color Our World.” Looking ahead, the library will host events for Banned Book Week in October and a series of Halloween festivities. Notably, the La Farge Branch Library will facilitate a costume exchange, allowing families to donate costumes that no longer fit and pick up new ones at no cost.

Neill commended the La Farge Branch staff for identifying and addressing community needs through this initiative. She said, “This way, people have access to costumes, and it’s not going to cost them anything, which I think for a lot of families, that’s kind of a barrier.”

Georgina McKee, executive director of the Friends of the Santa Fe Public Library, recalls her first library card fondly. She emphasized the essential role of libraries in providing access to information, calling a library card a “passport to information.” The Friends organization supports the library’s programming budget and is fully committed to increasing library card registrations. McKee stated, “I just think that it’s such an important thing, and so easy to do.”

Through this campaign and its various programs, the Santa Fe Public Library continues to foster community engagement and highlight the diverse resources available to residents.
