San Jose Schools Plan Major Changes with Closures and New Boundaries
San Jose Unified School District is considering significant changes that could impact thousands of families in the coming years. Plans are being proposed to consolidate, relocate, or close multiple elementary schools and redraw neighborhood boundaries. These adjustments could potentially alter the schools that students attend, necessitating new commutes and changes in classmates and teachers.
Formal recommendations are set to be presented to the school board on March 12, 2024. If approved, these changes could take effect as early as the 2026-27 school year or the following year, depending on the selected options. The district’s advisory committee finalized its suggestions in November 2023, leading to the formation of the Schools of Tomorrow Implementation Committee (STIC), which is responsible for developing actionable plans.
Proposed Changes and Options
The district has outlined three broad options. These range from limited consolidations and program relocations to more extensive boundary adjustments. Some school consolidations might be implemented by the 2026-27 school year, whereas certain boundary changes are projected to take effect with enrollments starting in 2027-28, as reported by KRON4.
In a communication to families, district officials highlighted several support measures being considered. These include bus transportation for students assigned to schools over 1.5 miles away, three hours of complimentary after-school programming, additional funding for campuses to welcome new students, and assurances that staff members whose roles are relocated will retain their positions at the same annual salary.
Rationale Behind the Changes
According to the Schools of Tomorrow presentation, enrollment in the San Jose Unified School District has decreased by approximately 6,000 students, which is about 20 percent, since the 2017-18 school year. This decline has resulted in an increase in the number of elementary schools with fewer than 350 students, which has doubled during the same period. District officials argue that smaller schools find it challenging to maintain essential services such as counseling, nursing, and specialized programs. By consolidating schools, the district aims to pool resources and provide better services for a larger number of children.
STIC plans to meet several times in the coming weeks to refine and narrow down its options before finalizing a recommendation for the school board. Families are encouraged to review the available materials and provide feedback. Superintendent Nancy Albarrán acknowledged the emotional impact that discussions about school consolidations and boundary changes can have on families. To enhance community engagement, the district has made committee meetings available for live streaming and provided Spanish interpretation to ensure broader access.
Next steps involve the school board reviewing STIC’s recommendations. If approved, some consolidations could begin as early as the 2026-27 school year, while other boundary changes would be implemented with the start of enrollments for the 2027-28 school year. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to stay informed by monitoring the Schools of Tomorrow meeting documents and participating in STIC or board meetings prior to any final decisions being made about the future of local elementary schools.
