The Rowan-Salisbury School Board has announced a vacancy following the resignation of Sabrina Harris, who represented District No. 6. Harris formally communicated her decision during the board’s latest meeting, where Board Chair Kathy McDuffie Sanborn read her resignation letter aloud. This decision marks a significant change for the board and the community it serves.

In her letter, Harris expressed her deep regret, stating, “It is with a heavy heart that I submit my resignation for my position on the Salisbury-Rowan Board of Education. Due to unforeseen personal circumstances, I am no longer able to dedicate the time and attention that this vital role requires and deserves.” She emphasized the meaningful nature of her service, reflecting on her commitment to the success of the Rowan-Salisbury Schools (RSS) community.

Reflections on Service and Accomplishments

Harris described her time on the board as one of the most rewarding experiences of her life. She noted her pride in the collaborative efforts to advance educational excellence and equity within the district, expressing confidence in the ongoing leadership of Superintendent Dr. Kelly Withers. “I am proud of what we have accomplished together in advancing educational excellence and equity,” she stated.

During her farewell address to the board, Harris extended gratitude to her colleagues for their support. “I want to thank Rowan-Salisbury Schools Superintendent Dr. Withers for the many ways she made me feel comfortable to be a board member as well as making sure I knew I was valued,” she said. Her remarks highlighted the camaraderie among board members and the dedication they share towards the students.

As she concluded her address, Harris reflected on the personal connections she made during her tenure, saying, “I’m going to miss looking across the table and seeing your smile as well as walking the halls of our school campuses.” She also expressed her lasting affection for the role, stating, “I will always cherish the memories I have as the Rowan-Salisbury School Board member for Special Seat No. 6.”

Next Steps for the Board

Following Harris’s resignation, the Rowan-Salisbury Schools Director of Marketing and Communications, Michelle Shue, outlined the process to fill the vacant position. The board is actively seeking applicants to fill the Seat 6 Special District position, with a deadline for applications set for September 15, 2025. All candidates must reside within the Special District to be eligible.

The selected candidate will serve the remainder of Harris’s term, which ends on November 30, 2026. Interested applicants can find the application on the Rowan-Salisbury School System website, as well as on its social media platforms. Notifications have also been disseminated to RSS families through ParentSquare to ensure broad awareness of the opportunity.
