Russia Strikes Kyiv as US and Ukraine Discuss Peace Plan
Early on March 5, 2024, Russia launched a series of strikes on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, targeting residential buildings and energy infrastructure. The attacks, which caused significant damage in the central Pechersk district and the eastern Dniprovskyi district, were reported by local authorities and captured in video footage. Mayor Vitalii Kitschko confirmed that at least four people sustained injuries from the strikes.
In Dniprovskyi, a nine-story residential building suffered extensive damage, with video shared on social media showing flames engulfing multiple floors. The Ukrainian Ministry of Energy indicated that energy infrastructure was also impacted, although specific details regarding the damage remain unclear.
The strikes occurred shortly after discussions in Geneva between representatives from the United States and Ukraine concerning a potential peace plan brokered by the U.S. and Russia. Delegate Oleksandr Bevz described the talks as “very constructive,” revealing that both sides were able to address most points of contention.
Tensions escalated as Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia had not yet reviewed the updated peace proposal. Concurrently, a meeting between U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll and Russian officials took place in Abu Dhabi. This meeting marked a continuation of negotiations aimed at ending the ongoing conflict, which has resulted in widespread suffering and displacement.
According to a U.S. official who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the negotiations, the Ukrainian side was aware of Driscoll’s meeting with Russian officials. The official emphasized that all parties expressed a desire to reach an agreement to halt the fighting as soon as possible, although specifics about the discussions remain undisclosed.
In a related development, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that its air defenses had intercepted and destroyed 249 Ukrainian drones over various regions, including occupied Crimea, during the previous night. The majority of these drones—116—were reportedly shot down over the Black Sea.
As the situation unfolds, the humanitarian impact of the recent attacks continues to raise concerns, with civilians bearing the brunt of the conflict. The international community remains watchful, hoping that diplomatic efforts will pave the way for a resolution to the hostilities.
