Ridgefield School District Faces Backlash Over Student Data Breach
The Ridgefield School District has come under scrutiny after unredacted documents were released, exposing the full names and identification numbers of students involved in allegations against a former cheer coach. This breach occurred during a public records request made by Rob Anderson, who hosts the investigative podcast “ReformCast.” Anderson highlighted this issue as a significant violation of student privacy.
In his latest episode, Anderson detailed the circumstances surrounding the release of these documents, which included the names of complainants and witnesses against former cheer coach Angela Campbell. Allegations against Campbell included intimidation and inappropriate conduct, with some reports indicating that she used profane language and engaged in retaliatory behavior towards students. According to Anderson, the emotional nature of these handwritten complaints illustrated the distress that cheerleaders experienced under Campbell’s coaching.
Anderson’s investigation began when a parent expressed frustration over the lack of action regarding complaints about Campbell. The parent did not consent to the release of their child’s name, yet it appeared in the unredacted records. Anderson noted discrepancies in the number of students affected, stating, “They say it’s only five documents, we say it’s six documents. We say that nine students were outed, identified; they say eight.” The Ridgefield School District acknowledged that there were 17 instances of unredaction in the records provided to Anderson.
Upon learning of the breach, the parent alerted the school district, prompting Anderson to receive a second set of records that still contained identifying information. He remarked, “I’ve just never seen anything like this,” indicating the severity of the oversight.
In response to inquiries from The Reflector, Joe Vajgrt, Director of Communications for the Ridgefield School District, stated that the district takes student safety and privacy seriously. He confirmed that the inclusion of identifying information was unintentional and that corrective measures were promptly taken. “Once the mistake was identified, we took immediate steps to correct it, including sending an updated records file,” Vajgrt said. He emphasized that the information had not been widely distributed and was sent directly to the individuals who made the requests.
Despite these assurances, Anderson expressed concern over the district’s handling of the allegations against Campbell, particularly the timeline of events. He noted that complaints about Campbell date back to 2023, and the district had nominated her for a state coaching award on May 30, 2025, just days before the formal complaint was lodged. “So this is just a classic situation where bad behavior — and instead of really letting the process bear out full accountability — they let this coach off the hook,” Anderson stated.
Vajgrt clarified that the district’s investigation into the complaints began promptly after they were received. He indicated that Dr. Jenny Rodriquez, the Ridgefield School District Superintendent, first learned of the concerns on April 25, 2025, and received a formal complaint on May 10, 2025. During this investigation, Campbell submitted her resignation on June 9, 2025.
Anderson has raised questions about the integrity of the district’s processes, suggesting that the prioritization of student well-being is not being adequately addressed. “What it shows is kind of a pattern where protecting students is not the priority,” he remarked, pointing to the need for accountability and transparency.
As the situation unfolds, both the Ridgefield School District and the broader community are grappling with the implications of this privacy breach and the ongoing concerns surrounding the handling of allegations against staff. The district’s commitment to safeguarding student information will be closely scrutinized in the wake of these revelations.
