Prime Minister Drew Strengthens Education Ties with Ghana

During an official state visit to Ghana, the Prime Minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis, Dr. Terrance Drew, engaged with the leadership of the University of Ghana on March 4, 2026. This meeting aimed to enhance academic cooperation and strengthen ties between the Caribbean and West Africa. Participants included the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, and Ghana’s Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie.

The discussions centered on expanding collaboration in higher education, research, cultural studies, and youth exchange initiatives. This follows the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Education of Saint Kitts and Nevis and the University of Ghana. Prime Minister Drew highlighted the critical role of education in national development, stating, “For us in Saint Kitts and Nevis, education has always been the foundation of national development.”

He further underscored the transformative potential of the partnership, emphasizing that the MoU represents a significant step towards deepening the historical and cultural connections between the Caribbean and Africa. “Our cultures, our resilience, and even the rhythms of our societies reflect that shared heritage,” he added.

In addition to education, the meeting explored collaboration in various priority areas, including climate resilience, public health, agriculture, digital innovation, and the creative economy. The potential for joint initiatives in diaspora and reparations studies was also discussed, recognizing the historical links between West Africa and the Caribbean.

Professor Amfo welcomed Prime Minister Drew and reaffirmed the university’s commitment to acting as a bridge between Africa and its diaspora. She emphasized the importance of ensuring that partnerships translate into tangible opportunities for students and researchers. The officials discussed the necessity of fostering people-to-people relationships, skills sharing, and youth engagement, with a focus on cultural exchange and knowledge transfer.

A proposal to establish a joint committee was suggested to help advance initiatives stemming from the MoU, ensuring collaborative projects transition from agreement to implementation. Prime Minister Drew also highlighted ongoing regional discussions aimed at enhancing connectivity between West Africa and the Caribbean, including efforts to establish direct air links to facilitate greater movement of people and trade.

This engagement is part of Prime Minister Drew’s broader program during his state visit, designed to strengthen diplomatic, cultural, and economic ties between Saint Kitts and Nevis and the African continent. The visit underscores the commitment to building meaningful relationships that benefit both regions through education and shared cultural heritage.
