Over 1,300 Students Explore Career Options at Futures Expo
A significant careers event took place on November 13, drawing over 1,300 students from across the Newark area. The Future First Careers Expo, organized by Newark and Sherwood District Council in partnership with the Lincoln College Group, provided an opportunity for students in Year 11 to 13 from ten different schools to explore various education, training, and career paths.
Now in its eighth year, the Expo has expanded its offerings, enabling teenagers to engage with a wide array of potential careers. Held at The Lady Eastwood Centre, located at Newark Showground, the event featured more than 50 exhibitors, including local employers, national companies, universities, colleges, and training providers.
Students had the chance to learn about apprenticeships, vocational courses, and emerging industries. This interaction allowed them to ask questions and gather information about opportunities they may not have previously considered.
Councillor Claire Penny, the portfolio holder for Sustainable Economic Development at Newark and Sherwood District Council, emphasized the event’s importance, stating, “The Future First Careers Expo continues to be one of the most impactful events in our calendar. It brings together education and industry in a way that empowers young people in our area to make more informed decisions about the next steps in their careers and futures. The enthusiasm and curiosity we saw from students this year was inspiring.”
The diverse mix of exhibitors included well-known national businesses such as Barclays, Currys, and Boots, as well as representatives from the British Armed Forces and Police Service. Educational institutions like Newark College, Nottingham Trent University, and West Notts College were also present, offering guidance on post-16 and post-18 educational routes.
The significance of the event was reflected in the feedback from attendees. John Trevatt, careers leader at Magnus Church of England Academy, noted that students gained vital insights into opportunities available beyond school. He remarked, “They engaged with employers, explored diverse career pathways from STEM to Creative Arts, and gained invaluable insights into the skills demanded by the modern workforce. It was a privilege to witness their eyes open to the vast opportunities ahead.”
The Future First Careers Expo was first launched in 2017 as part of broader efforts to enhance social mobility and ensure that all young people in the district have access to clear and achievable career pathways. By directly connecting students with employers and education providers, the organizers aim to elevate aspirations and support the development of the region’s future workforce.
As the event continues to grow, it is clear that the Future First Careers Expo plays a crucial role in shaping the career trajectories of young people in the Newark area. The blend of local and national representation, combined with the enthusiasm of the students, underscores the importance of such initiatives in preparing the next generation for a successful future.
