North Ridgeville Library Hosts Engaging Yoga Storytime for Kids
The North Ridgeville Branch of the Lorain Public Library System hosted a unique Yoga Storytime on July 25, 2023, aimed at helping children unwind and explore mindfulness through yoga. The program featured various yoga exercises alongside a thematic storytime, led by Felicia Coffey, a public services professional at the library.
Coffey, who has a personal interest in yoga, designed the program to introduce children to yoga fundamentals while maintaining the engaging elements of a traditional storytime. “I wanted to create an experience that was heavy on movement but offered something different, allowing children to connect with yoga in a fun way,” she explained.
The session began with a lively song, setting the tone for over a dozen children who participated in a series of stretches and movements inspired by yoga techniques. Coffey emphasized the importance of breathing exercises, teaching children techniques such as bear breathing and owl breathing. “The breathing aspect was really important to me because it’s a skill they can carry with them throughout their lives,” Coffey noted. “Just taking a deep breath can change how they perceive challenges.”
Coffey’s approach included memorable tactics designed for young minds. Techniques like pretending to breathe through a straw or balancing like a flamingo made the exercises both relatable and enjoyable. Each child was also presented with cards featuring different animals, each linked to a specific mindfulness activity. “I believe these connections will help calm their minds and make the techniques easier to remember,” Coffey said.
The success of a similar event held in winter prompted the library to offer this summer program. Parents and children alike expressed enthusiasm for the interactive nature of the session, which stands out from typical library offerings. “It’s always an adventure,” Coffey remarked. “The kids who attended really seemed to enjoy it, and I’m grateful that families are able to spend quality time together during these sessions.”
The Yoga Storytime at the North Ridgeville Branch highlights the library’s commitment to fostering creative and engaging programming for children. To learn more about upcoming events, visit lorainpubliclibrary.org.
