The Lynn First Church of Nazarene is set to host its third annual backpack and school supplies giveaway on August 9, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This community event aims to support local families as they prepare for the upcoming school year. Approximately 100 backpacks filled with essential supplies will be distributed, thanks to donations from the church, the Juneteenth Northshore Association, and local Girl Scouts troops.

The backpacks will include a variety of items such as notebooks, pencil cases, pencils, pens, erasers, and colored pencils. According to Pastor Gina Cordy of the First Church of Nazarene, “Backpacks and school supplies can be costly for a lot of families. We wanted to give what is needed at a time when it would be needed.”

Community Engagement and Support

This event not only provides school supplies but also fosters a sense of community among families. Nicole McClain, Lynn Councilor at Large and President of the Northshore Juneteenth Association, emphasized the importance of inclusivity for students. “Students need to feel a sense of belonging. If everyone else around them has what they need to start the school year, and they don’t, they feel othered,” she stated. “It’s important that we make sure every student comes to school feeling welcomed.”

In addition to the school supply giveaway, the church is collaborating with the Centerboard Lynn Family Resource Center to collect non-perishable food items for a food drive. This initiative seeks to address food insecurity in the community while ensuring that families have what they need as they prepare for the school year.

Activities and Community Cookout

The event will feature a range of activities designed to engage children. Attendees can enjoy sidewalk chalk, bubbles, and an arts and crafts station. A cookout will be provided by local resident Steve Thayer, with contributions including two cases of hot dogs from food manufacturer Old Neighborhood. Members of the Lynn Police Department will also be present to foster a welcoming environment.

Olivia Grinstead, Program Director at Centerboard Lynn Family Resource Center, highlighted the event’s mission: “We want people to feel comfortable and welcome. The main priority is bringing a sense of belonging and togetherness for the families.” The giveaway will continue until supplies last, ensuring that as many families as possible can benefit from these essential items.

This event reflects a strong commitment to community support and empowerment, helping local families to start the school year with confidence.
