The Uniontown Area School District bids farewell to Dr. Charles Machesky, who has concluded a remarkable career spanning 50 years in education. Machesky, who served as superintendent for the past 23 years, officially retired on March 5, 2024, marking a significant transition for the district. His successor, Dr. Daniel Bosnic, previously the assistant to the superintendent, has been appointed to take the helm.

A Legacy of Commitment and Transformation

Reflecting on his long tenure, Machesky expressed gratitude for his career, stating, “It was a productive and fulfilling career. But I’ve started to slow down and things in education are speeding up.” At 71, he noted that for the first time in five decades, he did not have the responsibilities of teaching, managing special education, or overseeing daily operations.

Machesky’s journey began in 1974 when he started as a special education teacher at Westmoreland Intermediate Unit. His commitment to education led him to serve as a principal, the district’s first supervisor of special education, and eventually superintendent. His leadership has seen the district through numerous challenges, including budget constraints and declining enrollment.

Throughout his career, Machesky remained dedicated to the district, even opting to work without pay since 2012. His decision has saved the economically disadvantaged district over $2 million, allowing funds to be redirected towards technology, facilities, and educational resources.

Plans for Retirement and Community Impact

Machesky emphasized the importance of his connections with students and staff, stating, “I’ll miss the daily interactions with the staff and students. That was always the highlight of my career.” He expressed pride in the accomplishments of the district, particularly the achievement of five administrators earning doctorates and the implementation of tuition reimbursement programs for staff.

Looking ahead, Machesky plans to spend more time with his family, including his wife, Mary, and their three daughters and four grandchildren, who are either living in or relocating to Charlotte, North Carolina. He also remains active in his community, serving as a subdeacon at St. George Maronite Church.

Dr. Bosnic praised Machesky’s influence on the district, stating, “He has a great sense of our school community. He understands our traditions and what makes our district so special.” As the district moves forward, Machesky’s legacy of leadership and dedication will undoubtedly inspire future generations of educators and students.

As Machesky steps into retirement, he reflects on a career that has not only shaped his life but has also significantly impacted countless students and families within the Uniontown Area School District. His commitment to education as a vocation highlights the profound influence that dedicated educators can have on their communities.
