Several local libraries are gearing up for an engaging November, featuring a variety of events and programs aimed at promoting community connection and cultural enrichment. These activities range from author conversations to educational workshops, offering something for everyone.

Highlights from Back Mountain and Hoyt Libraries

The Back Mountain Library and Hoyt Library have scheduled a series of events that cater to diverse interests. On November 13, at 19:00, acclaimed author Amanda Peters will discuss her bestselling novel, “The Berry Pickers,” along with her short fiction collection, “Waiting for the Long Night Moon: Stories.” Following her talk, on November 18 at 14:00, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Charles Duhigg will lead a conversation about effective communication in his latest work, “Supercommunicators: How to Unlock the Secret Language of Connection.”

In addition to author events, the libraries are hosting a special program on November 10 at 17:30, where presidential historian Dr. Larry Cook will interview George Venesky, a Vietnam veteran. This event will honor veterans and provide insights into Venesky’s experiences as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

Other activities at the libraries include an adults-only Bingo night on November 18 from 15:00 to 16:00, and a “Wicked” themed party for children aged 7 to 17 on November 17 from 17:15 to 18:30. The party will feature themed decorations, snacks, and a costume contest, among other fun activities.

Educational Opportunities and Community Support

The libraries also offer educational programs, such as free math tutoring sessions for students in grades 6 to 12, taking place every Wednesday from 15:30 to 16:45. These sessions are led by Fanhui Kong, a mathematics professor at Wilkes University. Registration for these tutoring sessions is required.

Community engagement is further emphasized through initiatives like “Help Restock Alice’s Closet.” This boutique, which accepts donations of gently used clothing, shoes, and homewares, aims to support local programs. Donations can be made during library hours, with all proceeds funding library initiatives.

Additionally, the White Haven Area Community Library is preparing for its annual Holiday Quilts and Crafts Show on December 6. This event will feature quilts from the Cranberry Quilt Guild, various craft vendors, and homemade food options, with all proceeds benefiting the library.

With a full calendar of events, local libraries are fostering a vibrant community atmosphere where residents can connect, learn, and engage with literature and the arts. For more information about these activities and to register, interested individuals can contact their respective libraries.
