Illinois State Faces Montana State for First FCS Title in Nashville
The Illinois State Redbirds are set to compete against the Montana State Bobcats for their first Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) title on March 15, 2024, in Nashville, Tennessee. This matchup marks a historic achievement for Illinois State, as they became the first team to win four consecutive playoff games on the road to reach the FCS championship game.
Illinois State linebacker Tye Niekamp expressed confidence in the team’s journey, stating, “As long as we get a bid in that playoff spot, we got a shot for everything.” The Redbirds, with a record of 12-4, have proven that they are focused on their own goals rather than outside expectations. This will be their first appearance in the title game since 2014.
Montana State, the No. 2 seed with a record of 13-2, is aiming for its first national championship since 1984. Under the guidance of coach Brent Vigen, the Bobcats are making their fourth appearance in the FCS title game and their second consecutive year in the playoffs. Justin Lamson, the first-year quarterback, highlighted the high standards set for the program, noting, “You want to be in this game, and you want to win this game. That is the standard for Montana State football.”
Road Success and Championship Venue
The championship game will be held at FirstBank Stadium, home to Vanderbilt University. This event marks a departure from its previous 15-year tradition in Frisco, Texas. Illinois State has demonstrated impressive performance on the road, boasting a 15-3 record away from home over the past two seasons. Their playoff journey included avenging a previous loss to UC Davis, which occurred in the second round of the 2024 playoffs.
Illinois State’s ability to thrive in challenging environments has set them apart; they lead all FCS teams with nine playoff road victories since the playoffs expanded to 24 teams in 2013. Their resilience showcases their determination to seize this opportunity for a championship.
Offensive Powerhouses
Montana State’s offense is led by Justin Lamson, who has excelled since transferring from Stanford. The Bobcats rank eighth in FCS scoring, averaging 38.1 points per game and completing an impressive 71.9% of their passes. The offensive line has provided a strong foundation, allowing Lamson to connect with standout running backs Julius Davis and Adam Jones, who have each surpassed 1,000 rushing yards this season.
On the other side, Illinois State’s quarterback Tommy Rittenhouse is enjoying a standout final season. He has thrown for 3,257 yards and set a single-season record with 36 touchdown passes. Rittenhouse’s leadership was crucial in a dramatic playoff victory over North Dakota State, where he threw two touchdowns in the final minutes to secure a 29-28 win.
Defensively, Montana State boasts a formidable presence with Caden Dowler, the Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year. Dowler has recorded six interceptions this season, leading a unit that allows just 18 points per game, ranking eighth in FCS. Their strong defensive performance will be critical against Illinois State’s dynamic offense.
Illinois State’s wide receiver Daniel Sobkowicz has made significant contributions, with seven touchdown catches in the playoffs, bringing his career total to 40. He aims to break the program’s record for receiving yards, needing just 59 yards in the championship game.
As both teams prepare for this pivotal match, the excitement builds for what promises to be a thrilling contest. The outcome will not only determine the champion of the FCS but also solidify each program’s legacy in college football history.
