Governor Mifflin Fourth Graders Launch Mock Businesses in Annual Event
A group of fourth graders from Brecknock Elementary School in the Governor Mifflin School District recently showcased their entrepreneurial skills during an annual business symposium held on November 21, 2023. The event featured a mock city called “Sweet Read City,” where students presented simulated businesses inspired by real local enterprises.
The symposium, organized by librarian Rachel Sebastian, aimed to teach students valuable concepts related to the economy, entrepreneurship, and community interdependence. “Sweet Read City provides a platform for students to understand real-world concepts while operating a student-centered library,” Sebastian stated.
Throughout the academic year, students engaged in a project enabling them to connect with local businesses. They learned about the products and services offered, explored career opportunities, and even visited some of these organizations. This hands-on approach aligns with the Total Experience Learning framework, which emphasizes experiential education.
Local business owners played a crucial role in the project, sharing their expertise to deepen students’ understanding of entrepreneurship. Participants included recognized names such as Classic Harley Davidson, East Penn Manufacturing, Schlouch Inc., LedgeRock Golf Club, Goodwill Industries, and The Restaurant Store. “By learning directly from business owners, students gain insights that extend beyond classroom walls,” Sebastian explained.
As part of the annual symposium, the students added new businesses to Sweet Read City, each modeled after actual establishments in the Berks area. The event culminated with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting and keynote speeches delivered by the fourth graders, showcasing their newfound knowledge and enthusiasm.
Sebastian highlighted the significance of the symposium, stating, “Experiences like this not only provide immersive, real-world learning but also nurture innovative, community-minded solutions.” The success of the event reflects the benefits of integrating educational frameworks that prioritize active participation and engagement.
The Governor Mifflin fourth graders’ initiative serves as a testament to the potential of experiential learning, fostering both academic growth and community connections. As these young entrepreneurs step into the world of business, they carry with them valuable lessons that will serve them well in their future endeavors.
