Former Investment Manager Transforms Career to Empower Kids

Shireen Eddleblute, a former portfolio manager with over three decades in the investment industry, has embarked on a new chapter as a children’s book author. After dedicating 11 years to family obligations, Eddleblute made the significant decision to leave her career in finance in March 2024, aiming to educate young readers about financial literacy through engaging stories.
Eddleblute’s journey began in the 1990s when she joined **Voyageur Asset Management** in 1999. Following its acquisition by **RBC** in 2001, she worked as a portfolio manager and senior equity research analyst until 2009. During her tenure, she co-managed a quantitative micro-cap fund and contributed to the growth of seed money for various projects. However, as her mother’s health declined, Eddleblute felt compelled to step away from her career to care for her family.
“My identity was intertwined with my career,” Eddleblute reflected. “But it was the best decision to focus on my loved ones.” This sabbatical lasted 11 years, during which she volunteered as a math tutor, helping vulnerable children develop essential skills. As her youngest child transitioned to college, the urge to return to work grew stronger, particularly in the realm of financial education for children.
In 2021, Eddleblute took on a leadership role at **Newday Impact Investing** as Chief Diversity Officer, co-portfolio manager, and director of ESG research. This position aligned closely with her values, emphasizing sustainable investments. Yet, the passing of her mother prompted a reevaluation of her life’s direction. Eddleblute recalled her upbringing, where her parents instilled a strong sense of community and financial responsibility.
In March 2024, she took the bold step to focus on her long-held passion for teaching financial literacy to children. Leaving the investment world behind, she founded **Sprouting Sparks**, a company dedicated to creating children’s books that introduce financial concepts in a relatable way. Eddleblute’s goal is to reach children aged four to eight, ensuring that finance becomes a familiar topic before they enter high school.
“I’m not naturally creative,” she admitted. To prepare for this new venture, she attended writing masterclasses and sought certification as a financial education instructor. Eddleblute also participated in a children’s author conference in Canada, where she gained the confidence needed to pursue her goal.
The publishing journey was not without challenges. Eddleblute worked with **Bear With Us Productions**, a hybrid publisher that assisted with editing, formatting, and illustration. Transitioning from a stable income in finance to self-funding her publishing project required courage, but Eddleblute felt fortunate for her previous success in portfolio management.
“My aim was never to become a millionaire from writing,” she stated. “If I can just reach one person, then I have succeeded.” The positive feedback from readers and five-star reviews on platforms like Amazon have fueled her motivation to continue producing content.
Eddleblute acknowledges the stark difference between her previous career managing substantial assets and her current role as a children’s author. While her financial compensation has decreased significantly, she finds greater happiness and fulfillment in her new mission. “Helping vulnerable and disadvantaged children brings me a sense of purpose,” she noted.
As she continues to write and expand her book series, Eddleblute remains committed to making a lasting impact. “I want to build something that could outlive me,” she concluded, reflecting on her journey from finance to education. Through her work, she hopes to instill financial knowledge in the next generation, ensuring they are equipped for a financially literate future.
