Florida State University Welcomes Class of 2029 with Record Applications

Florida State University (FSU) is set to welcome the Class of 2029 on August 25, 2023, as the new academic year begins. The incoming freshmen represent a diverse and talented group, reflecting the university’s commitment to academic excellence. With over 86,000 applications received for approximately 6,200 spots, this year’s admissions showcase a significant increase of nearly 182% in first-year applications over the past decade.
FSU President Richard McCullough extended a warm welcome to the new students, encouraging them to embrace the supportive environment on campus. He stated, “To our newest students, I hope that you’ll embrace the warm, friendly and supportive environment that makes FSU so special. Here we treat one another with kindness and respect, engage in thoughtful dialogue, and value the free exchange of ideas.”
Impressive Academic Profiles
The Class of 2029 joins FSU as the university continues its efforts to enhance student success, promote innovation, and engage in impactful research. The admitted students have demonstrated strong academic credentials, with an average core GPA ranging between 4.2 and 4.6. Their combined SAT scores fall between 1340 and 1450, while the ACT composite scores range from 30 to 33.
Moreover, the admitted class includes students from all 50 states, all 67 Florida counties, and 50 countries, representing a total of 2,751 U.S. high schools. Notably, 77% of these students achieved A/B grades in rigorous courses, and 64% have completed calculus or higher-level math. Additionally, 765 students earned their associate degrees while still in high school, showcasing their preparedness for college-level work.
Diverse Pathways and Opportunities
FSU offers various pathways for first-year students. Approximately 800 students will commence their journeys at Tallahassee State College through the FSU Next program, while nearly 315 students will begin their experiences abroad at one of FSU’s four study centers through initiatives like First Semester Abroad or First Year Abroad.
This academic year also marks the introduction of over 200 new faculty members across various disciplines, enhancing the educational resources available to students. In total, 6,707 students will reside in one of FSU’s 18 on-campus residence hall complexes, which include ten Living Learning Communities (LLCs) designed to foster collaboration among first-time college students.
The university’s commitment to high-achieving students continues with the Presidential Scholars Program, which will welcome a cohort of 60 first-year students. Additionally, the Honors Program aims to provide transformative educational experiences for over 800 students in the new class.
To kick off the semester, FSU has organized “Welcome FSU,” a series of events and activities that will run through August 30. These events are designed to help students familiarize themselves with campus resources and learn how to integrate into the FSU community.
The excitement continues as the FSU football team prepares to open its season against Alabama on August 30 at the newly renovated Doak S. Campbell Stadium. Students are invited to join the first Garnet & Gold Tailgate of the season at the Union Green, fostering school spirit and camaraderie among the FSU family.
As Florida State University welcomes this new class of students, it underscores its mission to provide a nurturing and engaging academic environment, preparing students for success in their collegiate journeys and beyond.
