Fairview Park High School Unveils $23,000 Girls Locker Room Upgrade
Fairview Park City Schools has officially opened a newly renovated girls locker room at Fairview High School, a project that cost approximately $23,000. The renovation was largely made possible by a generous $13,500 anonymous donation, reflecting a commitment to improving facilities for female athletes.
The enhancements create an environment akin to a collegiate locker room, as described by Fairview High School Athletic Director Jon Adams. The new space features 35 modern 22-inch wooden lockers, each standing 77 inches tall and designed with lockable storage. Adams noted, “It’s the wider version of lockers, so you could fit all your bags. There’s also bench seating and a shoe compartment underneath. Everything—school supplies, athletic supplies—fits into one locker for the girls now.”
Historical Context and Community Support
The previous locker room had been in place for over 20 years, with around 60 lockers that dated back to the time of the high school’s former indoor pool. This long-standing need for an upgrade was acknowledged by Dan Rajkovich, the Communications & Marketing Coordinator for Fairview Park City School District. The project not only addresses practical needs but also aims to foster a sense of belonging among female athletes.
The initiative gained momentum through the involvement of high school varsity girls basketball head coach Karen Swanson Haan. Since joining the district last year, she has focused on rebuilding both the culture and pride within the girls basketball program. Adams credited her for recognizing the importance of the locker room renovation in enhancing student morale, stating, “She knew how important something like this would be to making the kids feel welcomed.”
The funding for the locker room was supplemented by contributions of $5,000 each from the Fairview Park Athletic Club (FPAC) and the school district. Notably, the anonymous donor who provided the majority of the funding had previously financed a $34,000 upgrade to the Warriors weight room, indicating a sustained commitment to improving athletic facilities.
Future Plans for Equitable Facilities
The success of the girls locker room renovation has prompted discussions about future projects. Adams mentioned that he is considering a similar upgrade for the boys locker room, aiming to ensure equitable facilities for all student athletes. “We’re looking to possibly mirror the locker rooms, so that we have equitable locker room space for both our boys and girls,” he explained.
As Fairview Park City Schools continues to enhance its athletic programs, the community’s support and involvement play a pivotal role in creating an inclusive environment for all students. The renovations not only improve the physical space but also contribute to a culture of respect and pride in the school’s athletic achievements.
