Fairview Park City Schools has officially unveiled a newly renovated girls locker room at Fairview High School, a project that cost approximately $23,000. The renovation was primarily funded by a $13,500 anonymous donation, marking a significant upgrade for the school’s athletic facilities.

The newly designed locker room features 35 new 22-inch wooden lockers that stand 77 inches tall and include lockable storage. Jon Adams, the Athletic Director at Fairview High School, described the result as comparable to a collegiate varsity locker room. “It’s the wider version of lockers, so you could fit all your bags. There’s also bench seating and a shoe compartment underneath. Everything—school supplies, athletic supplies—fits into one locker for the girls now,” Adams explained.

Significant Improvements and Community Support

The previous locker room, which housed around 60 lockers, dated back to the time of the high school’s indoor pool, which was closed over two decades ago. This renovation aligns with the school district’s ongoing efforts to enhance the athletic experience for students. Dan Rajkovich, the Communications & Marketing Coordinator for Fairview Park City Schools, highlighted the importance of this upgrade for the girls’ sports programs.

Head coach of the varsity girls basketball team, Karen Swanson Haan, played a crucial role in bringing the locker room project to fruition. Having joined the district last year, Haan was tasked with revitalizing the school’s girls basketball culture and recognized how vital a welcoming locker room would be for the students. “She knew how important something like this would be to making the kids feel welcomed, so she helped out,” Adams noted.

The $23,000 renovation included additional improvements such as fresh wall paint. Alongside the anonymous donation, the Fairview Park Athletic Club (FPAC) and the school district each contributed $5,000. Interestingly, the same anonymous donor previously funded a $34,000 upgrade to the Warriors weight room last year, showcasing a commitment to enhancing athletic facilities at Fairview Park.

Future Plans for Equitable Facilities

Looking ahead, Adams mentioned plans to consider renovating the boys locker room to mirror the new girls facilities, promoting equity within the school’s athletic spaces. “We’re looking to possibly mirror the locker rooms, so that we have equitable locker room space for both our boys and girls,” he stated. This initiative is part of an ongoing dialogue with the FPAC regarding future projects aimed at enhancing the overall athletic experience for all students at Fairview Park High School.

As the school community celebrates this milestone, it is clear that the renovation of the girls locker room not only improves the facilities but also fosters a sense of pride and belonging among female athletes.
