Exeter School Board Approves Free Meals for Elementary Students
The Exeter School Board has taken a significant step to support families by approving a motion on October 17, 2023, to provide free breakfast and lunch for all elementary students in the district. This temporary measure will affect three elementary schools within the Exeter area, aiming to alleviate the financial strain faced by families amid ongoing concerns related to the impact of the recent government shutdown on SNAP benefits.
School officials emphasized that the decision was made with the intent of supporting families experiencing food insecurity. Heather Ikemire, Chair of the Exeter School Board, expressed the board’s commitment to ensuring that students focus on their education rather than worrying about where their next meal will come from. “I think the school board wanted to make sure that families that are facing financial insecurity and food security are supported in this moment,” Ikemire stated.
The board’s decision reflects a growing recognition of the challenges faced by families, particularly in light of the recent disruptions to federal assistance programs. The initiative aims not only to provide nutritional support but also to foster a conducive learning environment for all students.
By offering these meals, the Exeter School Board hopes to reduce the barriers that may hinder student participation in educational activities. This initiative is expected to benefit many families during a time when economic pressures are increasingly felt across the community.
As the program unfolds, the board will monitor its impact on student attendance and overall well-being, ensuring that the needs of families are met during these challenging times. The district remains committed to supporting its students and their families, reaffirming that access to nutritious meals is a fundamental right that should not be compromised.
