Evergreen School Board Votes to End Strike by Classified Employees
The Evergreen Public Schools board has unanimously approved a resolution aimed at compelling striking classified employees to return to work. The decision, made on the afternoon of August 31, 2023, comes after a strike initiated by paraeducators, bus drivers, security personnel, and maintenance staff on August 26, which delayed the start of the academic year.
Board member Ginny Gronwoldt expressed her regret over the current situation, stating, “It’s unfortunate we find ourselves here. The goal is to get students back in the classrooms.” The strike resulted from the union’s rejection of the district’s “final offer” during a vote conducted just days prior to the board’s resolution.
Resolution Details and Legal Implications
The resolution empowers the district’s legal counsel to take necessary legal actions to end the strike. These measures include seeking injunctive relief, pursuing monetary damages, and other appropriate remedies. Legal counsel is also authorized to initiate lawsuits against any individual employee participating in the strike.
Board President Jacqueline Weatherspoon emphasized that negotiations with the union will persist despite the board’s decision. “We are committed to finding a resolution that works for both the district and our employees,” she noted. The ongoing discussions aim to address the concerns raised by the classified staff, who play vital roles in maintaining the daily operations of the schools.
The strike has significant implications for the Evergreen community, as it affects not only the employees involved but also the students and families relying on the school system. The district’s swift action reflects its prioritization of educational continuity and the well-being of its students.
As the situation develops, further updates will be provided on the negotiations and any potential resolutions that may arise. The board’s proactive stance aims to minimize disruption and ensure that students can return to a stable learning environment as soon as possible.
