Interviews for the position of superintendent at Covington Independent Public Schools will enter their next phase on Saturday, marking a significant step in the search for a successor to current Superintendent Alvin Garrison, who plans to retire at the end of the academic year. The Board of Education has partnered with the consulting firm Alma Advisory Group to facilitate a unique search process that emphasizes community involvement.

During a recent meeting, Board Chair Tom Haggard highlighted the broad and diverse candidate pool available for selection. As of now, the district has received 44 applications from 16 states, showcasing a variety of backgrounds among the candidates. A demographic analysis presented by the board indicated that while most applicants are men, there is notable racial diversity, particularly among African-American candidates.

Community Engagement in Selection Process

The interviewing process has been designed with significant public participation in mind. The Board of Education has conducted extensive community input sessions, including online surveys and focus groups, to gather insights on what the community desires in its next superintendent. Key community priorities identified through this process include improving academic outcomes, enhancing work-based learning opportunities, and fostering better communication between the district and families.

The board’s press release outlined specific qualities sought in the new superintendent, emphasizing the need for experience in change management, academic turnaround, and authentic communication. The ideal candidate will also be expected to develop a culture of accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement within the school system.

The job advertisement for the superintendent position was published in November, with expectations to finalize a shortlist of two to three finalists by March 2024. This timeline reflects the board’s commitment to a thorough and thoughtful selection process.

Interview Process Details

As the search progresses, Kareem Simpson, a board member, pointed out that while the board will be kept informed, they will not have immediate access to all candidates. Initial interviews conducted by Alma Advisory Group will help narrow the field, with a screening committee set to begin virtual interviews this weekend. These interviews will be recorded, allowing board members to review the sessions and feedback forms for every candidate considered.

The screening committee is tasked with reducing the candidate pool to between five and seven individuals. The final round of interviews will involve a diverse panel of stakeholders, including two high school students, a parent or caregiver, a general community member, a school leader, a licensed teacher, and a non-teaching staff member. This approach aims to ensure that various perspectives from the community are represented in the selection process.

Community members will have the opportunity to nominate themselves or others to serve on the final interview panel, with selections made randomly from each designated group. This inclusive process underscores the district’s commitment to transparency and community engagement. Questions for the applicants can also be submitted by the public.

The nomination period for the interview panel begins on Friday, and the district has established a dedicated webpage to provide updates and information on the superintendent search process. While the page was not yet live at the time of this report, it will serve as a central resource for community members to learn about the process and submit nominations.

As the Covington Independent Public Schools prepares for this important transition, the active involvement of the community is expected to play a critical role in shaping the future leadership of the district.
