Construction Begins on Lakehead University’s New Veterinary Facility
Construction is set to commence this week on a new facility at Lakehead University aimed at supporting the first veterinary medicine program in Northern Ontario. The university has awarded a contract valued at $12.6 million to Tom Jones Corporation for the construction of the building, which will be named Gakina Awesiinyag, translating to “a place for all animals” in Anishinaabemowin.
This new structure will feature dedicated learning spaces for students, as well as accommodations for both large and small animals. Additionally, the facility will include storage areas for feed, bedding, and other essential supplies. Advanced mechanical systems will be incorporated to prioritize animal comfort, sustainability, and operational efficiency.
Collaboration with the University of Guelph
The Collaborative Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program will be offered in partnership with the University of Guelph. Students from Northern Ontario will begin their studies at the southern Ontario institution next month, with full instruction expected to take place at Lakehead by 2027. This transition will allow students to receive training in Thunder Bay before completing their program at Guelph.
Gillian Balfour, Vice-President/Academic at Lakehead University, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, “Bringing the program to life has taken years of planning and the dedication of many people. Breaking ground is an incredible milestone, and I expect construction to spark excitement across our campus community as students, faculty, staff, and friends see evidence of Lakehead evolving in new and exciting ways.”
Further Development Plans
In addition to the new veterinary building, the project includes renovations to Lakehead’s ATAC and CASES buildings to enhance clinical training, student life, and anatomy/pathobiology studies. Tenders for these additional components have not yet been issued.
The Ontario government is contributing $4.5 million towards Lakehead’s capital build requirements, with the possibility of up to $10 million in further funding. This investment marks a significant step forward in expanding veterinary education in the region and reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing educational facilities.
As construction begins, Lakehead University is poised to make a lasting impact on veterinary medicine training in Northern Ontario, preparing future professionals to meet the needs of the community and beyond.
