College of the Redwoods Celebrates Growth and Community Impact
The College of the Redwoods (CR) has reported significant achievements amid a challenging educational landscape. As the fall semester concludes, the institution has experienced a remarkable enrollment growth of approximately 10%, surpassing its target by 9%. This success highlights the dedication of faculty, counselors, and staff committed to fostering an inclusive learning environment.
Reflecting on the college’s mission, Dr. Keith Flamer, president of CR, emphasized the importance of collective responsibility and community support. He quoted Archbishop Desmond Tutu, stating, “Do your little bit of good where you are; it’s those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.” This sentiment encapsulates CR’s ethos and the impact of its educational initiatives.
Accolades and Achievements
CR has garnered significant recognition this year. It was acknowledged by the Campaign for College Opportunity for having the highest percentage of Black students complete a transfer-level English course within one year of enrollment. Such accomplishments reflect the institution’s commitment to educational equity and student success.
Moreover, CR achieved notable accreditation milestones. The Fire Academy received approval as an Accredited Regional Training Program, meeting the highest state standards for fire service education. Additionally, the forestry program secured accreditation from the National Society of American Foresters, making CR one of only two community colleges in California with this designation.
The college also hosted the Live Your Language Alliance conference, which gathered Indigenous leaders and educators to promote the restoration of Native languages. This initiative underscores CR’s partnership with tribal communities, ensuring that Indigenous knowledge and identity are preserved and celebrated.
Looking Ahead: Commitment to Community and Education
Despite facing political disruption and skepticism about higher education, Dr. Flamer remains optimistic about CR’s role in fostering a supportive and transformative educational environment. He articulated the college’s dedication to its mission and the need for collaboration, understanding, and resilience among faculty and students.
As the college community prepares to reconvene in January, Dr. Flamer is confident that CR will continue to uphold its values. The institution’s commitment to student potential, community well-being, and the importance of education in challenging times remains steadfast.
CR’s journey over the past year illustrates the power of collective effort and the impact of a supportive educational community. As Dr. Flamer noted, the college will continue to be a space for dialogue and mutual understanding, ensuring that it remains a beacon of hope and opportunity for all its students.
