Stacy Davis Gates, the president of the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU), has been elected to lead the Illinois Federation of Teachers (IFT). The announcement was made on October 7, 2023, following her election as part of a newly constituted leadership team. In her capacity as IFT president, Gates aims to address the critical issues facing educators and students across Illinois.

Gates emphasized that the new leadership slate reflects the diverse needs of students throughout the state. “The belly of a child who just had their one hot meal a day cut from school budgets rumbles the same, whether that young person is on the southside of Chicago or in Cahokia,” she stated. Her comments highlight ongoing concerns regarding educational funding and the well-being of students.

Serving as CTU president since 2022, Gates previously held the role of executive vice president for the IFT. She underscored the urgency of fulfilling promises made by politicians in Springfield, aiming to support students from all districts in Illinois.

The leadership transition comes after Dan Montgomery, the previous IFT president, concluded his tenure, during which he served for 15 years. Gates acknowledged Montgomery’s contributions to the union, stating, “Dan leaves behind a legacy of courage, compassion, and principled leadership. He helped make IFT a powerful force for justice in Illinois.”

In addition to Gates’ election, the IFT has appointed several other officers to its leadership team. Cyndi Oberle-Dahm, the Southwest Area Council President, will assume the role of Executive Vice President. Pankaj Sharma, the President of the North Suburban Teachers Union Local 1274, will serve as Secretary-Treasurer, and John Miller, President of the University Professionals of Illinois Local 4100, will take on the position of Membership Secretary.

The newly elected team aims to enhance collaboration among educators across various regions and advocate for improved educational policies. The focus on inclusivity is a key theme in Gates’ vision for the federation, as she looks to unite teachers in addressing the challenges they face in their professions.

As the IFT prepares for its upcoming initiatives, Gates has reiterated her commitment to fighting for the educational rights of students and teachers alike, promising to hold policymakers accountable for their commitments.
