Cabrillo College Watsonville Center: Empowering Local Education

Dusk recently settled over the Cabrillo College Watsonville Center, a vital educational resource for residents of Pajaro Valley. Established in 1987, the center provides local students with access to a range of college courses, making higher education more accessible for those living and working in the area.

The Watsonville Center is designed to accommodate various educational needs. It offers an extensive selection of college transfer courses alongside non-credit offerings in English as a Second Language (ESL) and mathematics. In addition, students can pursue skills certificates and specialized career training in fields such as Emergency Medical Technology (EMT), Fire Technology, Construction Energy Management, and Early Childhood Education.

Cabrillo College has a rich history, dating back to its inception in 1958 when Santa Cruz County voters approved the formation of a junior college district. The college’s first classes were held in temporary facilities at Watsonville High School. This initiative was part of a broader strategy to enhance higher education opportunities within the region.

In 1960, voters supported a second funding measure, enabling the establishment of a permanent campus in Aptos. By 1962, Cabrillo College had grown to accommodate 2,000 students, marking a significant milestone in the expansion of educational services in Santa Cruz County.
