Arend T. Thibodeau is set to release his fifth book, titled Maine’s Military Might: Memories of Military Infrastructure in the Pine Tree State, on November 28. This publication delves into the strategic military developments in Maine from the early 19th century through the Cold War, highlighting the state’s evolving role in national defense.

The book explores the historical context following the War of 1812, during which military strategists recognized Maine’s vulnerability due to its inadequate defenses. This realization prompted Congress to endorse the construction of various military fortifications, referred to as the “third system” of U.S. fortifications. The narrative continues into the aftermath of World War II, when the onset of the Cold War redefined military strategies across the nation, particularly in Maine.

As tensions escalated globally, Maine became a focal point for new defense mechanisms. The state saw the establishment of radar bases, missile launch facilities, a naval air station, and two Air Force heavy bomber bases, among other installations. These developments underscore Maine’s strategic importance in safeguarding the nation during a time marked by the threat of nuclear conflict.

Thibodeau’s book takes readers on a historical journey through these military sites, many of which are now recognized as places of historical significance, while others have been left to nature, forgotten and abandoned. The author sheds light on why certain locations were chosen for military use and their impact on both local and national defense strategies.

Residing in Maine with his wife, Thibodeau has had a successful career as a professional photographer since 1996. His work has earned accolades in galleries spanning from Maine to Athens, Greece, and he has contributed to various genres, including wildlife and portrait photography. Alongside his artistic pursuits, Thibodeau is passionate about writing. He earned dual degrees in art and English literature from the University of Maine, graduating summa cum laude. His literary contributions during university included poetry, non-fiction, and academic writing.

When he is not engaged in photography or writing, Thibodeau enjoys teaching photography and exploring unique locations. His latest book is expected to resonate with history enthusiasts and those interested in Maine’s military heritage, providing a comprehensive look at the state’s role in the defense of the United States.
