Alvernia University Surpasses Fundraising Goals, Celebrates Leaders
Alvernia University recently marked a significant achievement in its fundraising efforts by surpassing its ambitious goal for the Partners in Progress Campaign during the annual President’s Dinner. The university, located in Reading, Pennsylvania, has raised a total of $71.5 million, exceeding its initial target of $45 million and later revised goal of $70 million. Dr. Glynis A. Fitzgerald, the university president, emphasized the importance of this milestone, stating, “More important than that total are the lives behind it: first-generation learners who persist, health care practitioners and engineers trained for real workplaces, families served in our city, and alumni who turn gratitude into action.”
The event, held at the DoubleTree by Hilton Reading, also highlighted the university’s proactive approach to the challenges facing higher education. Fitzgerald noted that Alvernia is committed to experiential learning and community engagement while preparing for future growth opportunities, such as the redevelopment of the former American House into a community-based health center. This project, costing approximately $17 million, is in partnership with Berks Community Health Center and aims to provide essential health care services to underserved populations in Reading.
Honouring Community Contributions
During the evening, Alvernia University recognized several alumni and community leaders for their significant contributions. The prestigious CollegeTowne Award was presented to the Wyomissing Foundation for its longstanding support of the university and its initiatives that enhance the quality of life in the Reading area. Officials noted that the foundation has been a vital partner since 1985, contributing to critical projects such as the Student Center and the Francis Hall renovations.
The Franciscan Award was awarded to Kevin and Kim Murphy for their exceptional service to Alvernia and the community. Kevin Murphy, who founded the Berks County Community Foundation, has played a pivotal role in regional philanthropy, while Kim Murphy has led Berks Nature in protecting over 7,600 acres of land and promoting environmental education.
The Distinguished Alumni Award was given to LeeAnn Smulligan, a 2009 graduate, for her impactful work at Mrs. T’s Pierogies, where she has advanced from marketing assistant to chief operating officer. Her leadership in the food industry has earned her recognition, including the upcoming 2024 FoRWARD Award.
Christopher deGruchy received the Ellen Frei Gruber Award for exemplifying the values of service and humility. A graduate in both 1993 and 2005, deGruchy has dedicated his career to finance and operations while actively supporting various charitable initiatives through the deGruchy Charitable Fund.
The event also featured the sixth presentation of the 4 Under 40 Awards, recognizing outstanding young professionals. Recipients included Alexandria Crouthamel, Ashley Mikulsky, Brett Sneeringer, and Gabriella Valenti, all of whom have made notable contributions in their respective fields.
Looking Ahead
Dr. Fitzgerald concluded the evening by reiterating the university’s commitment to addressing the evolving needs of its students and the local community. She urged attendees to continue investing in initiatives like the American House, stating, “With your partnership, we will keep saying yes to students whose talent deserves a chance and to neighbors whose dignity deserves our best.”
As Alvernia University celebrates its fundraising achievements and honors those who contribute to its mission, it also sets its sights on future growth and continued community engagement, reinforcing its role as a vital educational institution in the region.
