45 Infected, 12 Hospitalized in Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Supplements
A salmonella outbreak linked to the popular supplement Live It Up Super Greens has led to the recall of specific products after 45 individuals across 21 states reported illnesses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed that 12 of these cases resulted in hospitalization. The first instances of infection were noted as early as August 2025, highlighting the prolonged nature of this public health issue.
As consumers increasingly turn to powdered greens supplements for their perceived health benefits, experts emphasize that these products should complement a diet rich in whole fruits and vegetables rather than replace them. A registered dietitian previously noted the importance of maintaining a balanced diet, which is essential for overall health.
The CDC has advised that anyone who has purchased the affected Live It Up Super Greens powders refrain from consuming them. The recalled products include both the Original and Wild Berry flavors with expiration dates ranging from August 2026 to January 2028. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommended a voluntary recall by Superfoods, Inc., the manufacturer, which was initiated on January 14, 2026.
Salmonella bacteria can lead to gastrointestinal illness, and while most healthy individuals recover without complications, certain groups, including young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems, are at a higher risk for severe symptoms. The typical symptoms of a salmonella infection can manifest anywhere from 6 hours to 6 days after exposure and include:
– Stomach cramps
– Diarrhea
– Nausea
– Fever
– Chills
– Vomiting
– Blood in stool
The Mayo Clinic notes that most healthy individuals will see symptoms resolve within a week, though some may experience prolonged bowel irregularities. For those with more severe reactions, immediate medical attention is crucial, especially if symptoms include bloody diarrhea or signs of severe dehydration.
The CDC continues to monitor the outbreak and encourages anyone experiencing symptoms or who may have consumed the recalled products to consult with healthcare professionals promptly. This ongoing situation serves as a reminder of the importance of food safety and the potential risks associated with dietary supplements.
