Monroe County Unveils Advanced Crime Center to Enhance Safety

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office has launched a new facility aimed at revolutionizing law enforcement operations in the region. The Regional Investigative Operations Center (RIOC), located in Greece, New York, is designed to enhance coordination among law enforcement agencies, streamline investigations, and bolster safety across the county and its surroundings.

Deputy Michael Fowler emphasized the center’s unique position as a resource for smaller agencies that may lack the capacity to establish similar capabilities. “We’re in a position where we can provide something like this, especially as a resource to those smaller agencies that just wouldn’t be able to duplicate this,” Fowler stated. This facility is the first of its kind in Western New York and aims to provide officers with immediate access to crucial information.

Real-Time Technology Enhances Operations

The RIOC integrates various advanced technologies to support law enforcement efforts. The center provides officers on patrol with real-time data, including the locations of patrol cars and officers on foot. “It shows a different icon for a deputy on foot versus the patrol car,” Fowler explained. This functionality allows operators to deploy drones to specific locations simply by tapping on a screen, enabling immediate aerial support during critical incidents.

The center is currently in its learning phase, staffed with 12 analysts and deputies trained in identifying and mitigating mass violence. They have direct access to camera networks, drone technology, and license plate readers, which collectively provide vital real-time information to officers in the field.

Fowler highlighted the center’s ability to enhance officer safety. “If a deputy doesn’t answer their radio, we can access their body-worn camera and view the video live right here,” he noted. This capability allows the team to inform responding deputies about the situation they are entering, crucial information that can influence their response to emergencies.

Future Operations and Expansion Plans

Currently, the RIOC operates during the day, with plans to extend its hours in the near future. “We anticipate in March, we’ll get to about 16 hours a day, six days a week,” said Fowler. This operational tempo will be evaluated to determine if further adjustments are necessary to meet the needs of local law enforcement.

The establishment of the Regional Investigative Operations Center marks a significant advancement in how law enforcement agencies in Monroe County will tackle crime and ensure public safety. With its cutting-edge technology and strategic focus on collaboration, the facility is poised to play a critical role in safeguarding the community.
