Community Mourns Julia Ann Chlanda, Devoted Public Servant

Julia Ann Chlanda, a lifelong resident of Torrance, California, passed away on August 25, 2025, at the age of 68. Known for her dedication to public service and her deep love for family, Chlanda’s life was marked by her commitment to her community and her passions.
Born and raised in Torrance, Julia graduated from Torrance High School in 1975 before earning a bachelor’s degree in history from Loyola Marymount University in 1979. Her professional life spanned an impressive 37 years, during which she served as a Deputy Clerk for the California Court of Appeal in Los Angeles. Colleagues and friends recall her diligent work ethic and her willingness to assist others.
Community Engagement and Personal Passions
Julia’s involvement with the community extended beyond her professional career. She was an active member of Torrance First United Methodist Church, participating in the youth group and choir during her youth. Later in life, she contributed to the church by serving as a Sunday School teacher, shaping the lives of many children in the community.
Her love for the performing arts, music, film, and literature enriched her life and the lives of those around her. Julia also had a profound affection for animals, reflecting her nurturing spirit. Above all, she was a devoted mother, raising her two children, Samantha and Ryan Cody Chlanda, in the South Bay area. Julia’s unwavering support encouraged them to pursue their passions and dreams, and her nurturing presence formed the foundation of their lives.
Legacy and Survivors
Julia is survived by her daughter, Samantha Chlanda of Los Angeles; her son, Ryan Cody Chlanda of Torrance; her sisters, Patricia Champlin Castillon (Frank) of Murrieta, Melissa Malone of Culver City, and Michele Pulliam; and her brother, John Chlanda (Teri) of Washington. She also leaves behind her partner, Kinji Inomata, as well as her uncle, Milton “Pat” Wood of Torrance; aunt, Dorothy “Dot” Peterson of Torrance; nephew, Jordan Champlin of Murrieta; stepmother, Jo Ann Weldon of Palmdale; and numerous cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Betty Champlin, Chauncey Champlin, and Ted Chlanda. Julia will be remembered for her kindness, dedication, and the profound love she had for her family and community.
Services for Julia Ann Chlanda will be held at 15:00 on September 27, 2025, at Torrance First United Methodist Church. The community is invited to come together to celebrate her life and contributions.
