Woodland Rotary Clubs Launch Centennial Legacy Project Initiative
Woodland, California, prepares to celebrate a significant milestone as the local Rotary Clubs unite for a “Centennial Legacy Project” set for April 19, 2026. This initiative marks the 100th anniversary of the Rotary presence in the community. The three clubs involved—the Noon Rotary Club, Woodland Sunrise Rotary, and Luna Vista Rotary—are actively seeking ideas from the public for a long-term project that will leave a lasting impact on the city.
The goal is ambitious: to create a “visible, long-lived improvement” that will benefit Woodland residents for decades. This call for public input is notable, as the clubs emphasize the need for a project that transcends typical community efforts, such as planting trees or minor renovations. They are looking for something substantial, a legacy that reflects the spirit of the community.
Community Engagement and Historical Context
Reflecting on the essence of a vibrant city, the Rotary Clubs draw inspiration from a quote by Chet Hamblin, published in the Woodland Rotary Club Bulletin over 15 years ago. Hamblin posed a critical question: “What makes a city great?” He believed that while physical attributes like transportation and resources are important, the true character of a city lies in its citizens’ quality of life and spirit.
Woodland has a rich history of civic organizations contributing to its development. Over the years, various clubs, including the Lions Club and the Soroptimists, have played pivotal roles. The Women’s Improvement Club, established in May 1902, is one notable example. This group aimed “to do anything within the power for the general benefit of the city,” successfully raising funds for the Woodland Cemetery and the Woodland Public Library. Their most significant achievement came in 1909 when they donated an entire block for the creation of City Park.
Now, the current Rotary leaders seek to continue this tradition of community enhancement. According to Aniek Pflager, who serves as the 2025-26 president of the Noon Rotary Club, “We want this milestone to mean more than a party. We’re looking for a project that fills an unmet need—something that may not be already planned or fully funded that our community will be proud of in year 100 and year 150.”
Project Criteria and Suggestions
The Rotary Clubs have outlined several key criteria for the Centennial Legacy Project. They are looking for projects that can have a broad impact on Woodland residents, particularly those that serve youth and seniors. The project must be enduring and visible, such as a capital improvement or a community amenity that will stand the test of time. Feasibility and collaborative opportunities are also crucial, as the clubs welcome partnerships and community involvement in funding and volunteer efforts.
Potential ideas could include the development of another park in the new Business & Technology Park located east of Highway 113 near County Road 25A. Another suggestion involves the installation of a visitor center at the Woodland Regional Park. There is also the possibility of establishing a museum to celebrate local history, potentially utilizing a former LDS Church on Cottonwood Street, which is currently on the market for $2.5 million.
Community members interested in contributing their ideas for the Centennial Legacy Project can do so by visiting woodlandrotary.org and filling out the Centennial Suggestion Form. Alternatively, they can email their suggestions to [email protected] by December 1. The Rotary Clubs are eager to hear from the public and ensure that this legacy project reflects the needs and aspirations of the entire community.
