Teacher Brandon Bailey Wins Michigan Lottery Excellence Award
Brandon Bailey, a fifth-grade teacher at Forest View Elementary in Cadillac, Michigan, has been awarded the prestigious Michigan Lottery Excellence in Education award. This recognition highlights his effective teaching methods and strong rapport with students, earning him a cash prize of $2,000 and eligibility for the $10,000 Educator of the Year award at the end of the school year.
Recognizing Excellence in Education
The Michigan Lottery established the Excellence in Education awards in 2014 to honor exceptional public school educators across the state. Bailey, who has dedicated 21 years to teaching, has spent the last eight years at Forest View Elementary. He attributes his teaching philosophy to a love of hands-on learning, encouraging students to engage actively in their education.
“I love to teach. I am passionate about it,” Bailey stated. “It is rewarding to pass on the love of learning. I wanted to put the learning in the hands of the students and watch them learn by doing.” His approach emphasizes the importance of student involvement in the learning process, believing that engagement leads to better understanding.
Community Support and Impact
Bailey was nominated for the award by Heidi Collins, a parent of a former student. Collins praised Bailey for his ability to foster trust and provide support both academically and emotionally. “Mr. Bailey goes above and beyond helping students surpass their expectations academically, as well as positively impacting their character and social skills,” Collins remarked.
Reflecting on his nomination, Bailey noted its significance, particularly due to the connection he formed with Collins’ son, who joined his class later in the school year. “We talked about fishing and his hockey activities, which resonated with his mom,” he explained. This bond exemplifies Bailey’s commitment to building strong relationships with his students, regardless of when they enter his classroom.
Forest View Elementary Principal Jake Wing emphasized the importance of recognizing educators like Bailey, stating, “There are wins every day in classrooms that people don’t always see. It’s nice for him to get this recognition.”
Superintendent Jennifer Brown of Cadillac Area Public Schools highlighted Bailey’s significant impact on student achievement and classroom culture, noting, “The historic student growth achieved in his classroom is not accidental. It reflects a standard Brandon set for himself through hard work and intentional planning.”
Bailey earned his bachelor’s degree from Aquinas College and a master’s degree from Nova Southeastern University. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he also serves as the high school girls golf coach, further demonstrating his commitment to student success.
The Excellence in Education nominees are evaluated on various criteria, including excellence, dedication, inspiration, leadership, and effectiveness in advancing student achievement. Bailey’s recognition serves as a testament to the vital role educators play in shaping the future of their students.
