Fanny Lu Celebrates Musical Comeback with ‘Una Vida Bien Vivida’

Fanny Lu has made a triumphant return to the music scene with her new album, Una Vida Bien Vivida, released in May 2023. This marks her first studio album since 2011‘s Felicidad y Perpetua. The Colombian artist’s latest work features collaborations with well-known names such as Bacilos, Carlos Baute, Olga Tañón, and Yuri, encapsulating a vibrant mix of joy and positivity.
In a recent interview with Billboard Español during her visit to New York, Fanny Lu expressed that she never truly left the music industry despite the gap between albums. “I’ve always stayed in music with singles,” she said, reflecting on her experience as a coach on La Voz and La Voz Kids, where she spent seven years nurturing new talent. During this challenging period in her life, she navigated a difficult personal journey, including her divorce from the father of her two children.
The album, which translates to “A Life Well Lived,” is produced by José Gaviria and is described by Lu as a cathartic process. “I kept saying, ‘I need an album,’” she stated, highlighting the importance of creating a complete narrative through her music. For her, the album-making process allows for self-discovery and reinvention, something she yearned for as she approached the 20th anniversary of her musical career.
Reflecting on Growth and Empowerment
Fanny Lu emphasizes that her journey has been one of personal growth and empowerment. “A life well-lived isn’t a perfect life; it’s a life of falls, tears, effort, and sweat,” she remarked. As she reflects on the differences between her past self in 2011 and the artist she is today, she recognizes a deeper understanding of her worth and artistry.
The sounds of her music have evolved as well. Describing her style as a fusion of tropical Colombian rhythms, Lu draws inspiration from a variety of genres, including merengue and pop. Influenced by icons such as Celia Cruz and Juan Luis Guerra, she insists on creating songs that resonate with her personally. “It’s been a beautiful stubbornness to always be myself,” she stated, ensuring that her music remains authentic to her identity.
Collaborations and Community
The collaborations featured on Una Vida Bien Vivida were chosen with care. Lu explained that working with artists she has admired throughout her career made the comeback even more special. “It was very spontaneous, as if each song spoke to me,” she shared.
Beyond her musical pursuits, Lu is actively involved in promoting gender equality in the music industry through Spotify’s EQUAL campaign. She has observed a significant shift towards collaboration and empowerment among female artists. “Women shining, women empowered,” she noted, highlighting the positive changes she has witnessed in the industry.
As she steps back into the spotlight, Fanny Lu embraces her multifaceted life as a mother, wife, and artist. Her reflections on motherhood reveal how her experiences have shaped her artistic sensitivity. “My music was born alongside my children,” she said, demonstrating the deep connection between her personal and professional life.
With the release of Una Vida Bien Vivida, Fanny Lu not only celebrates her musical resurgence but also shares a message of self-love and resilience. “If I could sing only one song for the rest of my life, it would be ‘La Mujer Que Soy,’” she concluded, as it encapsulates her greatest discovery: the transformative power of self-acceptance.
As she looks forward to the next chapter of her career, Fanny Lu’s journey exemplifies the strength and beauty of embracing one’s true self.
