Dairy Queen Celebrates 85 Years with Miracle Treat Day on July 31

Dairy Queen is set to celebrate two significant milestones this summer: the return of Miracle Treat Day on July 31, 2024, and the 85th anniversary of the brand’s iconic soft-serve ice cream. This year also marks the 40th anniversary of the popular Blizzard, a treat that has become synonymous with the Dairy Queen experience. The event serves as not only a celebration of these anniversaries but also as an opportunity to support Sanford Children’s Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota.
On Miracle Treat Day, $1 or more from every Blizzard sold at participating locations will be donated to Sanford Children’s Hospital. The funds raised are crucial for purchasing life-saving equipment, enhancing pediatric services, and providing support for families in need. “It’s DQ’s sweetest day for a great cause,” said Tonya Johnson, owner-operator of several DQ locations in the Fargo area. “If you’re going to buy a Blizzard anyway, this way it helps local children’s hospitals at the same time.”
History of Dairy Queen and the Blizzard
The origins of Dairy Queen trace back to 1940, when the first store opened in Joliet, Illinois, selling 5-cent soft-serve cones. This innovation quickly captured the hearts of Americans, paving the way for the brand’s enduring popularity. Fast-forward to 1985, when Dairy Queen introduced the Blizzard, a soft-serve treat mixed with candy and cookies. Initially marketed in cups featuring the beloved character Dennis the Menace, the Blizzard became an instant hit, with prices under $2 for all sizes.
Over the past 40 years, the Blizzard has evolved to include more than 170 flavor combinations. While about 20 flavors are available year-round, seasonal varieties like the Pumpkin Pie Blizzard have garnered significant attention. Even as the original mascot has faded from public view, the Blizzard continues to delight customers and remains a cornerstone of Dairy Queen’s offerings.
Dairy Queen has also made strides in philanthropy. In 1984, the company partnered with the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, aiming to transform ice cream cravings into meaningful contributions for children’s healthcare. Over the past 41 years, Dairy Queen has raised over $185 million for children’s hospitals through this partnership.
Miracle Treat Day Impact and Popularity
Since its inception in 2006, Miracle Treat Day has become a signature event for Dairy Queen, often surpassing even Mother’s Day in sales. Johnson noted that it is consistently one of their busiest days of the year, with customers eager to contribute to a worthwhile cause while enjoying their favorite desserts.
While all Blizzard flavors contribute to the fundraising efforts, the Oreo Blizzard has consistently ranked as a fan favorite since its launch. It is closely followed by other popular choices like Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup. Seasonal offerings like cotton candy and s’mores have also gained traction during the summer months, creating excitement among customers.
This year, 16 Dairy Queen locations across the Fargo region will participate in Miracle Treat Day, including establishments in Moorhead, West Fargo, Dilworth, Horace, Hawley, Barnesville, and Casselton. Many of these locations also offer delivery options through third-party apps, though Johnson recommends checking with local stores for availability and potential large order accommodations.
For those wishing to support this charitable event, participating locations can be found online at www.miracletreatday.com or through the DQ App. As Dairy Queen prepares for this special day, the combination of nostalgia, community spirit, and delicious treats promises to make this year’s Miracle Treat Day a memorable occasion for all.
