Beloved Musician and Radio Salesman Don Turcotte Passes Away

Donald (Don) Turcotte, a cherished figure in Brainerd, Minnesota, passed away at home on September 12, 2025, at the age of 76. Surrounded by family, he leaves behind a legacy marked by his passion for music and a successful career in radio advertising sales.

A celebration of Don’s life will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at the Brenny Family Funeral Chapel in Baxter, Minnesota. Visitation will commence at 10:00 am, followed by a service at 11:00 am. A luncheon will be offered after the service, allowing friends and family to gather and share memories.

Early Life and Musical Journey

Born on November 12, 1948, to Ovella and Daisy Turcotte in Brainerd, Don developed a love for music at an early age. Over the years, he played in various local bands, taking on the roles of lead singer and guitarist. His most notable collaboration was with the band Axel and the Wheels. In a poignant highlight of his musical career, Don performed alongside his son, Tom Turcotte, who played the drums.

In addition to his musical contributions, Don dedicated over 50 years to a career in radio advertising sales. His approach to business was personal; many of his clients became long-lasting friends, reflecting his genuine character and commitment to fostering relationships.

Family Life and Lasting Legacy

Don married the love of his life, Cheryl Puetz, on June 6, 1987. Together, they built a life filled with adventure, enjoying activities like motorcycling, camping, and traveling. Family was central to Don’s existence, and he cherished the time spent creating memories with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Cheryl; his daughter, Melissa Herrera, of Benson, Arizona; his son, Tom (Nikki) Turcotte, of Brainerd; and his daughter, Ashley (Kyle) Wilshusen, of Pillager. His grandchildren—Alex Granillo, Josh Herrera, Kelsey, Taya, Ayven, Zyler Turcotte, and Jude Wilshusen—along with his great-grandchildren, Maverick and Valeria, will carry on his spirit.

Don is also remembered by his sister, Lorraine Thoms; brother, Charles Turcotte (Marilyn); brothers-in-law David Puetz (Margie), Jim Puetz (Pat), and Joe Puetz (Jaynee); sisters-in-law Mary Chapman (Tom) and Kathy Gangestad (Dudley); numerous nieces and nephews; and close friends Virginia Smart, Henry and Leona Stockert, and Rhonda Hope.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ovella and Daisy; his sister, Joyce; his daughter, Andrea; and his father and mother-in-law, Joe and Evelyn Puetz. Don also mourned the loss of his lifelong best friend, Duane Smart.

Arrangements for Don Turcotte’s memorial have been entrusted to the Brenny Family Funeral Chapel in Baxter, ensuring that his memory will be honored and celebrated by all who knew and loved him.
