Lamia Scott and her nine-year-old son, Braxton, have made significant adjustments to their lives following the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease in Lamia’s mother, Marvia Scott. After experiencing troubling symptoms, Marvia, aged 75, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s with agitation in December 2023, prompting Lamia and Braxton to move into her mother’s home to provide support and care.

Lamia Scott, a 43-year-old flight attendant from Dallas, Texas, described her relationship with her mother as incredibly close. Marvia had always been a source of love, kindness, and support, especially for her grandson, Braxton. Living just across the street, Lamia and Braxton frequently visited, with Marvia often taking on babysitting duties. This close-knit dynamic changed when the signs of Alzheimer’s began to appear.

Marvia’s forgetfulness and irritability raised concerns for Lamia. The once vibrant former softball coach began to exhibit behaviors that were out of character, such as sudden anger at restaurant staff and moments of unexpected crying. Lamia noticed serious safety issues, including a gas odor in the house, stemming from Marvia inadvertently leaving the stove on. Despite Marvia’s denial of any problems, Lamia sought medical help, which led to the eventual diagnosis.

Facing the Reality of Alzheimer’s

The diagnosis of Alzheimer’s was particularly poignant for Lamia, as her maternal grandmother had suffered from the same disease. Understanding the challenges ahead, Lamia made the decision to leave her rental apartment and move in with her mother just three weeks after the diagnosis.

Braxton, who adores his grandmother, adapted quickly to the new living arrangement. He recognized the changes in Marvia, often questioning why she would repeat herself or exhibit moments of frustration. Lamia took the time to explain Alzheimer’s to Braxton, helping him understand that his grandmother’s behavior was not a reflection of her feelings towards him. This education instilled a sense of pride in Braxton, who felt honored to assist in her care.

Lamia expressed admiration for her son’s empathy and patience. While there have been moments of frustration for Lamia, such as when Marvia repeats herself, Braxton demonstrates a gentle approach by reassuring his grandmother and encouraging her to ask questions again.

Challenges and Community Support

One of the most significant challenges for the family has been Marvia’s tendency to wander. Lamia has come home to find her mother missing, only to discover that Marvia had forgotten her cellphone and wandered off. To address this issue, they have implemented technology, including a tracking app on Marvia’s phone and a Ring camera, to monitor her movements and ensure her safety.

Support from neighbors has been invaluable during this time. They have stepped in to help, notifying Lamia when they see Marvia out alone and unable to find her way back. Lamia has also found assistance through the organization, Alzheimer’s Agitation, which connects her with others facing similar challenges, reinforcing the notion that she is not alone in her caregiving journey.

Despite these supportive measures, Lamia admits to feeling overwhelmed. Balancing her responsibilities as a caregiver, a single mother, and a flight attendant can be daunting. She occasionally utilizes a care service while she works and may take family leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) when necessary.

Reflecting on her own experiences, Lamia sometimes feels guilt when comparing her caregiving journey to her mother’s previous role in caring for her grandmother. Yet, she remains committed to providing the best care possible for Marvia, the woman she loves dearly.

Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s is challenging, but Lamia Scott’s story highlights the power of family, compassion, and community support in navigating this difficult journey.
