Cindy McCain Recovering After Mild Stroke in Italy Hospital
Cindy McCain, the head of the United Nations World Food Program (WFP), is recovering at a hospital in Italy following a mild stroke earlier this week. The organization confirmed her condition, stating that the 71-year-old widow of the late Senator John McCain is recuperating “well” and is preparing to return to her home in Arizona.
In a statement, McCain expressed her gratitude to the medical staff in Italy, saying, “I want to thank the medical staff in Italy for the excellent treatment I received. My recovery is progressing well thanks to their outstanding care.” She is expected to make a complete recovery, similar to her previous experience in 2004, when she also suffered a minor stroke but recovered swiftly.
Commitment to Global Food Assistance
As a prominent advocate against global hunger, McCain has been recognized for her leadership at the WFP, particularly in addressing humanitarian crises in Gaza and Ukraine. During her absence, she expressed “full confidence” in her team’s capabilities to continue delivering “urgently needed food assistance” to over 100 million people across 87 countries.
“The fight against hunger has never been more critical,” McCain stated, emphasizing the importance of ongoing efforts to combat food insecurity. She also mentioned her eagerness to return to the field soon to further support these initiatives.
McCain’s political journey has been notable; she notably broke with the Republican Party to endorse Joe Biden for president in 2020, a decision that drew criticism from some party members. Nevertheless, her focus remains on humanitarian issues, and she continues to be a leading voice at the WFP.
As she recovers, McCain’s commitment to tackling global hunger remains steadfast, reflecting her dedication to improving the lives of millions facing food scarcity.
