Woodland Schools Prepare for Annual Walk-a-Thon Fundraiser

The Woodland Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) is set to host its annual walk-a-thon this fall, engaging students from three local schools to raise funds for their educational programs. Scheduled to take place across North Fork Elementary, Columbia Elementary, and Woodland Middle School, this event combines fitness, school spirit, and fundraising, benefiting the students directly.

During the walk-a-thon, students collect flat pledges from family, friends, and neighbors, which they then use to support their respective schools. On the event day, students will walk or run laps while enjoying music, snacks, and the chance to win prizes. According to Woodland PTSA President Jennifer Allik, “All the money raised goes directly back to that kid’s school.” She noted that funds are allocated to three key areas: teacher grants for classroom needs, building improvements, and grade-specific events such as field trips and special programs.

Jennifer Allik described the atmosphere during the walk-a-thon, stating, “We turn music on, we have snacks, we have prizes, and it’s friendly competition for the kids to get out on their track and walk or run and see how many laps they can get in.” The PTSA has been instrumental in enhancing school facilities, including the installation of a paved walking track at Columbia Elementary and new projector systems at both North Fork and Woodland Middle School.

Event Schedule and Community Involvement

The walk-a-thon schedule begins with North Fork Elementary on September 25, 2023, followed by Columbia Elementary on October 9, 2023, and concluding with Woodland Middle School on October 22, 2023. Each event will occur during the school day, allowing classes to rotate through their walking times. Last year, the PTSA raised $23,000 across the three schools and aims to meet or exceed that amount in 2023.

To support the event, organizers are calling on the community for donations and supplies. Essential items include small disposable water cups, juice boxes, individually wrapped snacks, chips, stickers, and other small prizes. Financial contributions are also welcome to help purchase these supplies.

Allik emphasized the need for volunteers to assist during the event. She invited parents, grandparents, community members, and business owners to participate. “We’re really trying to grow and expand our membership and our possibilities,” she said. Volunteers will help cheer on students, distribute snacks, and manage event logistics.

Building Community Connections

Allik expressed her hope that participating students will gain more than just fundraising experience. She stated, “I hope that they gain a sense of being part of the community, meaning Woodland community, as well as their individual school community, and feel like they are making a difference for their school, and for the other friends and students around them, and for the teachers.”
