University of Wisconsin–Madison Achieves Top 40 Ranking in U.S.
The University of Wisconsin–Madison has secured a notable position in the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings, claiming the 36th spot overall among 438 doctoral institutions in the United States. This marks the fourth consecutive year the university has been featured in the top 40, reflecting its commitment to excellence in undergraduate education.
In the 2026 edition of the rankings, released on September 23, 2025, UW–Madison moved up from 39th to 36th overall and from 13th to 12th among public universities. Furthermore, it made a significant leap in the “Best Value Schools” category, climbing 42 places to achieve the 47th position. This category considers factors such as financial aid and the net cost of attendance.
Strong Performance Across Programs
UW–Madison’s undergraduate nursing program stands out, ranking eighth overall and fifth among public institutions. The university also received commendable rankings in various other disciplines, including engineering, computer sciences, business, economics, and psychology. Notably, the Wisconsin School of Business’s undergraduate real estate program has been recognized as the best in the nation for the fourth consecutive year.
Chancellor Jennifer L. Mnookin expressed satisfaction with the rankings, stating, “Rankings are just one of many measures of any school’s success, including ours, but I am gratified to see our excellence recognized.” She emphasized the university’s dedication to maintaining high educational standards and fostering innovation in teaching and learning.
The university is actively enhancing its academic reputation through initiatives such as the Wisconsin Research, Innovation and Scholarly Excellence (RISE) Initiative. This program aims to attract new faculty in emerging fields, expanding opportunities for students while modernizing campus facilities.
