On October 18, 2023, nearly 130 secondary school students from the Chicago area participated in the 25th United Airlines-Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIU) Aviation Career Day. The event aimed to inspire the next generation of aviators and provide insights into the aviation industry.

Leading the initiative were United Airlines Captain GJ Priester and his son, First Officer Alex Priester. With a deep-rooted connection to aviation and a personal history tied to SIU, Captain Priester shared his journey and passion for flying with the students. “I can’t recall a time when I didn’t want to be a pilot,” he remarked, reflecting on his family’s legacy in aviation.

Connecting Students with Opportunities

Throughout the day, attendees engaged with hands-on activities and informative sessions about SIU’s nationally recognized aviation program. Students aged 13 to 17 learned about various career paths in aviation, including piloting, air traffic control, and aircraft maintenance. The program is designed to provide both theoretical knowledge and practical experience, making it an attractive option for aspiring aviators.

Captain Priester emphasized the importance of early exposure to aviation careers, stating, “Events like this open doors and allow students to envision themselves in roles that might seem out of reach.” The enthusiasm among the participants was palpable, as they took part in discussions about what it takes to succeed in the aviation field.

Building the Saluki Family

SIU has long been recognized for its contributions to aviation education, and its partnership with United Airlines reinforces this commitment. The university’s aviation program has produced numerous successful pilots and aviation professionals, many of whom have gone on to have distinguished careers in the industry.

The event not only aimed to educate the students but also to foster a sense of community among future aviators. By introducing them to the Saluki family, the nickname for SIU’s community, the initiative sought to create lasting connections and support networks for students as they pursue their aviation aspirations.

As the day concluded, the energy among the participants was high, with many expressing a newfound excitement about their future career paths. The United Airlines-SIU Aviation Career Day stands as a testament to the collaborative efforts of educational institutions and industry leaders to cultivate the next generation of aviation talent.
