Tahoe CERT Launches Free Training Academy for Residents This Fall

The Tahoe Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is inviting residents to apply for its free basic CERT academy this fall, aimed at equipping individuals with essential skills to respond effectively during emergencies. The in-person training sessions will be held on September 30, October 2, and October 4, providing participants with crucial knowledge to assist their neighbors and gather information during large-scale incidents.
CERT teams are typically supported by local agencies to offer training and resources. Across California, there are approximately 472 CERT teams, with over 2,700 teams nationwide. These volunteer groups are vital for disaster response, particularly when first responders are either unavailable or overwhelmed. Volunteers assist in locating individuals in need of professional help, and they are trained in firefighting, search and rescue, triage, and first aid.
Training Program Details
The Tahoe CERT academy features a comprehensive curriculum covering disaster preparedness, fire safety, and utility control. Participants will also learn about disaster medical operations, psychological first aid, light search and rescue, terrorism awareness, and hazardous materials safety. Training sessions are conducted by certified instructors and various local agencies, including Cal Fire, Lake Valley Fire, and Barton Health.
Tina Cullen, CERT team coordinator, emphasized the importance of community preparedness, stating, “When residents are trained and prepared through programs like CERT, it makes the entire community stronger. In a large-scale emergency, first responders can be quickly overwhelmed, so having neighbors who know how to help themselves and others buys valuable time and saves lives.”
The total duration of the academy is 14 hours. Participants must attend the following sessions: September 30 from 17:30 to 20:30, October 2 from 17:30 to 20:30, and October 4 from 09:00 to 17:00. Additionally, they are required to enroll in a hybrid online course that takes approximately 12 hours to complete. Upon finishing all training requirements, participants will receive a CERT graduation certificate.
How to Register
Residents interested in joining the academy can register by emailing [email protected]. This program not only prepares individuals for emergencies but also fosters a sense of community and resilience, benefiting all local residents in times of crisis.
Tahoe CERT also provides ongoing training opportunities for volunteers, focusing on emergency preparedness education. By participating in these programs, community members can enhance their skills and strengthen their readiness for any potential disasters.
